SCGS RESEARCH TOUR 

The Southern California Genealogical Society exists to foster interest in family history and genealogy, preserve genealogical materials, and provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques. With over 40,000 volumes, the SCGS Library holds one of the most extensive genealogical collections in the southwestern United States. Collections include family histories, periodicals, maps, and microfilm, as well as vital records, cemetery records, local and state histories.

The SCGS Family Research Library will open Thursday morning for Jamboree registrants. The Society's online databases and computers will also be available for use. Transportation will be provided between the Marriott and the SCGS Library. Meet at the NW corner of the Convention Center. Feel free to arrange your own private transportation if you want a more flexible schedule. The SCGS Family Research Library is about 1.5 miles from the Marriott and driving instructions will be available in the Convention Center.

Registration and payment are required. In the event that the trip is canceled due to low attendance, the registration fee will be refunded by check and mailed by the end of July.

Jamboree is offering the printed syllabus for purchase for $25, and the Genetic Genealogy syllabus for $10 through April 22, 2017. Prices go up April 23rd.

We will be placing the orders with the printer shortly after the Early Bird registration deadline expires - so if you want a copy, make sure you order now through the online registration process!

As members of the Jamboree committee have been out and about representing SCGS and the conference, many first-time attendees have asked if we had some tips on how to maximize their conference experience.

Genealogy conferences are a great place to learn new skills, network with fellow researchers and review new products and services. Whether you are attending for the first time or are a conference veteran, a successful conference depends on your experience at that conference,

You could spend hours searching out information on how to improve your conference experience. To make it easier for you, we have listed links previous Jamboree blog posts and other articles to assist you in improving your conference experience. Although the posts were written a while ago, they contain valuable and relevant information for 2016 (thank you to former Jamboree co-chair, past SCGS Officer and board member Paula Hinkel for compiling the information and making it available to everyone).

There are many articles written by bloggers, speakers, and conference attendees. A simple Internet search for "tips for attending a genealogy conference" brings up some great links. Please report any issues or concerns immediately to one of the Jamboree managers or Marriott staff. Thank you for your cooperation.

Jamboree - Q&A for Monday, June 2

Q: When will you be sending the syllabus? When will I get my syllabus?

A: You will pick up the syllabus at the registration table when you check in at Jamboree. We don't mail them in advance.

The printed version of the syllabus was available for purchase until May 30. We will have a limited number of copies available at the SCGS Sales Table when the exhibit hall opens at noon.

Remember that many of the syllabus articles are available for download from the Jamboree app. You don't even need to install the app in order to get the handouts. You can get them from our page at http://m.core-apps.com/scgs2014.

Jamboree - There's a Blog Post You Need to Read

The Ancestry Insider is one of my favorite bloggers; and even when I'm hard-pressed to find a spare minute, I make sure to take some time to keep up to date with him. Today's post, #NGS2014GEN Planning Your Time at a Conference, is terrific, for a couple of reasons.

First, he does a very good job of reviewing his use of the conference app used at the National Genealogical Society's conference that was held in early May. Before you yawn and stop reading this post because it doesn't pertain to you, let me remind you that the same developer, Core-Apps, is responsible for both the NGS and Jamboree apps. It very much pertains to you if you're on your way to Burbank in a couple of weeks.

Core-Apps seems to have become the vendor of choice for many of the genealogical conference mobile apps. They have worked with FamilySearch, IAJGS (the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies), NGS and Jamboree. When SCGS launched the first mobile app for a genealogy conference back in 2011, we selected the developer with the most experience and best product. It's gratifying to see so many other organizations using their services.

So, when the Ancestry Insider described in detail how he used the NGS app, even I got insight into how the features can best be used.  You too can learn from his experience using the schedule feature, deciding which sessions to attend, how he coordinates the schedule with his Outlook calendar.

Take a few minutes and read what he had to say. You'll learn a lot about using the Jamboree app. You might not agree with his method of selecting one session over another, but you'll get a good tutorial on how to make use of the features.

Now for the second reason that I love what he wrote. It has to do with conference handouts. Specifically, this:

Sometimes a session lacks a handout, demonstrating the presenter’s lack of respect for attendees...

Yeah. That.

AI, thanks for putting this into words. We have had blank pages in the syllabus in prior years, and we have some this year. We've had one-page outlines that could have been texted while the speaker waiting in the drive-thru at Starbucks. It makes the speaker look bad, it makes the speaker's organization or business look bad, and it makes our conference look bad. I wish more speakers understood that.

One feature that AI didn't mention on the app is the speaker evaluation. Our attendees are going to have a chance to provide feedback about the syllabus materials, as well as other aspects of speaker performance, for every class session. The speakers will get scanned copies of hand-written evaluation forms, and we will provide them with digital copies of the app comments.

I hope everyone takes the comments to heart.

The #SCGS12 app is online and available for download at http://m.core-apps.com/scgs2012. It is available for Mac, Android, Blackberry and web-enabled smartphones.

At this time, the speakers are listed, as are the onsite and virtual exhibitors. The Twitter feed is buzzing and links to the SCGS Facebook and LinkedIn pages are active.

Nearly 100 syllabus articles are posted and available for download as well. THANK YOU to the speakers that are making this valuable material available on the app.

We just sent the Jamboree syllabus to Tom Underhill at Creative Continuum, who is printing the syllabus for us again this year. The speakers submitted informative, valuable material; and Dave Obee did a wonderful job of editing. It's a valuable resource.

As a reminder, only those Jamboree attendees who registered for the full three day weekend during the early-bird period (before April 30) will receive a print copy of the syllabus. Everyone will receive a copy on CD.
