Due to the unexpected illness of a family member, Emily D. Aulicino, MA, will be unable to present at the Genetic Genealogy conference. Our thoughts are with Ms. Aulicino and her family at this time.

TH005: "Family Finder, 23andme, and Ancestry DNA: An Introduction" - Tim Janzen, MD

• This presentation will help you maximize your experience with each of the three major autosomal DNA tests available: Family Finder, 23andMe and AncestryDNA. Experience level: All.

• Tim Janzen, M.D. is a family practice doctor in Portland, Oregon. He has had an interest in genealogical research for over 35 years and has particularly been involved in Mennonite genealogical research for the past 20 years. He is a co-administrator of the Mennonite DNA project. Tim has a strong interest in many areas of genetic genealogy, particularly in regards to phasing and autosomal DNA analysis. He is a consultant to the genetics company 23andMe as one of their Ancestry Ambassadors.

TH010: “Developing a DNA Testing Plan" - Paul Alan Woodbury

• Preserve the past by testing your relatives now. Given specific research considerations determine the who, what, when, where, why and how of DNA testing. Develop a plan to make your genetic genealogy research a success. Experience level: Beg.

• Paul Alan Woodbury is a recent graduate of Brigham Young University where he studied Genetics and Family History. He currently works as an outreach manager and DNA specialist for Legacy Tree Genealogists. He also works as an online course developer for Salt Lake Community College. In addition to genetic genealogy, Paul specializes in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Scandinavian research and regularly presents on research topics related to these fields.

TH015: “Verify, Correct, and Expand Your Lineage through DNA Testing” - Emily D. Aulicino, MA

• Learn how autosomal DNA testing can help you verify your lineage, correct your oral family history, and expand your pedigree chart. Through various success stories, you can discover how others have triumphed and how you can as well. Experience level: All. 

• Emily D. Aulicino, MA, a genealogist since 1970, has given multiple presentations on genetic genealogy and writing family stories for a variety of cultural groups and internationally for WDYTYA, BTOP and Germany. She was interviewed for television, newspapers, and blogtalk radio. She writes two blogs and has published a book on genetic genealogy. Her articles have appeared in Irish Roots (Ireland) and genealogical societies’ publications. She is a speaker for the International Society of Genetic Genealogists (ISOGG) and is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and OGC.

TH021: “Why Y? Case Studies for Y-DNA Solutions” - Katherine Hope Borges

• Real-life case studies detailing instances utilizing Y-DNA testing for solving genealogical mysteries. Experience level: Intermediate, Advanced. 

• Katherine Hope Borges is the Co-Founder and Director of The International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG), which promotes and educates about genetic genealogy. ISOGG has grown to over 8,000 members in 70 countries. Through ISOGG, Katherine has increased professional standards in the practice, research, and discussion of relevant issues in DNA testing, interpretation, and ethics. She organized a speakers bureau and has given many presentations on genetic genealogy to groups across the United States and in the United Kingdom. She administers several surname, regional, and haplogroup DNA projects.

TH026: “Circles or Triangles? What Shape Is Your DNA? ” - Diahan Southard

• There is much debate in the genetic genealogy world about the value of a DNA Circle, provided by AncestryDNA, and the triangulation methods of others. Which is best? Experience level: Intermediate, Advanced.

• Diahan Southard, a microbiology graduate, worked before and after graduation for the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. Growing up with the budding genetic genealogy industry lead her to her current position as Your DNA Guide, where she provides personalized interactive experiences to assist individuals and families in interpreting their genetic results in the context of their genealogical information. Diahan's lectures are always fun, upbeat, and full of energy. She has a passion for genetic genealogy, a genuine love for people, and a gift for making the technical understandable.

We are so excited to announce that the mobile app for the 2014 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree is now available for download!

The Jamboree mobile app is available for the following operating systems: iOS (iPad, iPad mini, iTouch, iPhone); Android; BlackBerry; Windows; in fact, all web-enabled phones.

Laptop and desktop users can also make use of the app. The app is truly valuable for everyone attending Jamboree.

Many improvements have been made since the first Jamboree app was introduced in 2011. The updated 2014 version, again developed by Core-Apps LLC, offers the following features designed to improve the Jamboree experience for attendees, exhibitors and speakers.

It is with great pride that we announce that the Mobile App for the 2013 Jamboree is now available for download. We are exceedingly grateful to Ancestry.com for again sponsoring what we think is the Best. App. Ever. for a genealogy conference.

The 2013 App has lots more content, more graphics, more of everything.

If you used either the RootsTech or NGS apps earlier this year, the Jamboree app will be very familiar. Ever since Jamboree launched the first conference app in 2011, our developer, Core-Apps, has become the provider for genealogy conference apps. They understand what genealogists are looking for, and they have helped us create a product that is sure to enrich your experience at Jamboree.

You can find the App by looking for SCGS 2013 (with the space). But here's an even easier method. Click the app graphic above to be taken to the Core-Apps website for Jamboree. No matter which platform you use --  iPad, iTouch, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows ... even if you don't have a device on which to use an app -- you can go to the Core-Apps page, clink the link and request a text that you can use to download the app.

Features of this year's app:

Create your own personal schedule with the sessions, meetings, social engagements you want to add. You can even link it to your main device calendar.

The Class section includes, for each session:  the date, time, location, description, and speaker name. Options are provided to record class notes and provide feedback by rating the session directly from the app. Syllabus article, when they are provided, are also linked to the class page. While articles are not present for all sessions due to some speakers' requests, you will find a wealth of information that will help you at Jamboree and for years thereafter.

Plot your tour of the exhibit hall. Exhibitors are listed with their booth numbers, contact information, and description. Watch for this section to bloom as the exhibitors add their logos and upload PDFs of their membership forms, special offers or other information they want to share. The Jamboree App is different from others because we including virtual exhibitors, ones not physically at Jamboree, who want to connect with attendees.

In the Speaker section, you'll find photos, bios, and links to all of each speaker's presentations. Find your favorites and get those sessions scheduled first.

You are able to create a profile, make friends with other attendees, upload photos of the conference, and follow and post on Twitter directly from the App. Turn on your settings to receive alerts and keep up to the very minute with all the news.

We still have a couple of surprises up our sleeve so watch for updates.

Jamboree: #SCGS12 Mobile App is Alive and Growing

The #SCGS12 app is online and available for download at http://m.core-apps.com/scgs2012. It is available for Mac, Android, Blackberry and web-enabled smartphones.

At this time, the speakers are listed, as are the onsite and virtual exhibitors. The Twitter feed is buzzing and links to the SCGS Facebook and LinkedIn pages are active.

Nearly 100 syllabus articles are posted and available for download as well. THANK YOU to the speakers that are making this valuable material available on the app.

Exhibitors, you will receive an email with instructions on how to jazz up your listing with graphics, PDF downloads and other suggestions.

Genealogy Jamboree: There's Another App for That!

Thanks to the support of the conference Diamond Sponsor, Ancestry.com, Jamboree will again offer a mobile app for the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, which will be held June 8-10, 2012 in Burbank, California.

Last year's App was a big hit among attendees, exhibitors and speakers. "The 2011 Jamboree app introduced a completely new aspect to genealogy conferences. It provided advanced communication and scheduling capabilities and added to the overall experience," explained Leo Myers, Jamboree chair. "We were honored that other conferences followed Jamboree's lead and rolled out their own conference apps."

The App offers many useful features to the attendees

• Interactive show schedule - review the schedule in advance and add the sessions to your calendar in just one click.
• Exhibitor listings and product searches - Find out which exhibitors are there to help solve your research problems.
• Exhibit hall floor map - use the map to plot your shopping strategy.
• Speaker bios and information - search for your favorite speakers' sessions and then add them to your schedule
• Show alerts - get instant updates of room changes, reminders of special events, unconference sessions, etc.
• Twitter and Blog updates - Follow #scgs12 tweets and post yours from within the app.
• Exhibitor e-brochures and product information available for download.
• Syllabus articles will be available for download before Jamboree. View them in your iPad, print them, or move them onto your Kindle, Nook or other e-reader.

The App is available for iPhone / iPod Touch, Blackberry and Android users, and is available as a web-based application for all other smartphone users. Users do not need to be connected to the Internet to be able to use the schedules and other static information. It will be available for download soon from www.scgsgenealogy.com.
