ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
An 1867 law allowed that males 21+ years, regardless of skin color, were eligible to vote; extant 1867 voter registrations are invaluable to genealogists.  Lists of Qualified Voters were created across the south and beyond.  These are the first lists to include those formerly enslaved. Also discussed are later voter laws enacted to combat rampant racist restrictions on voters.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
A professional genealogist since 2004. Has researched for the popular TV show Who Do You Think You Are? and appeared on the Bryan Cranston episode. Has authored almost 300 articles for such publications as Internet Genealogy and Your Genealogy Today. Currently editor of the North Carolina Genealogical Society journal. Has spoken nationally about the availability and richness of southern records, genealogical research techniques and tips, under-utilized resource collections, etc.

African Americans served in every war starting with the Revolutionary War in 18th century. However, segregation impacted their roles. What was it like to be an African American soldier before the Executive Order of 1948 integrating the military? What part did African American women play in military? Where do you find records?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Janice Lovelace, Ph.D. (psychology) has 30+ years of experience in genealogical research, as well as completing academic work in the area (certificate program in genealogy at Boston University). She has presented nationally and regionally on women’s and ethnic minority genealogy, research methodology and health issues.

She writes a monthly genealogy column for the Santa Ynez Valley Star newspaper.
