ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

Our country is one of religious diversity.  Except for the very early days in the colonies, there has never been a “state religion”.  Part 2 covers arrival in America.  A number of different religions and their beginnings will be discussed.  Part 1 covered the beginnings and causes in Europe that may have led to their emigration (presented on October 16, 2019).  SCGS Members may wish to log into the Member Only section for a refresher on Part 1.

Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG®, FOGS, has become a favorite speaker at conferences and webinars.  She serves as a Family History Center director, and is an instructor and author at Legacy Family Tree Webinars, Ancestry Academy, Family Tree University, and a columnist for Reminisce magazine.  She received the 2018 Laura G. Prescott Award for Exemplary Service to Professional Genealogy.

Bounty land was offered as compensation for soldiers who fought in the Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War, but veterans of these wars didn’t simply take up residence on their land grants. Some did, but many people who weren’t veterans ended up with these lands. Learn about the laws, all the people who got involved, and where to find the records.

Documenting the migration paths of my grandfather and his 3 siblings (1904 - 1911) involved home sources, oral history interviews, passenger lists, naturalization documents, Russian-language directories, microfilm and other sources. You will learn how you can apply this process to identify your ancestor’s town of origin and the likely route between it and the departure port and more.

Jane Neff Rollins, MSPH, is a professional genealogist. Her genealogical education includes ProGen 29, SLIG, and the Forensic Genealogy Institute. She regularly translates Russian-language records and speaks at local, regional, and international genealogy conferences. She is a member of APG, NGS, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild.  Jane’s writing has appeared in RootsKey, a genealogy newsletter. Jane is also the author of “Health Care Navigation 101.”

Johanne Gervais, BSc, MBA, worked for over 25 years at various large companies in Montreal developing and implementing computer business systems. She became interested in genealogy while helping her husband write a book about his family for his mother’s 90th birthday. She is the founder of the Québec Genealogical eSociety (www.genquebec.com), a completely virtual non-profit genealogical society focused on Quebec research launched at RootsTech 2018.

This lecture moves backwards from a death certificate to uncover someone who kept his tribal connections and name private. Retired college professor and former Board-Certified genealogist, Jean Wilcox Hibben has a Master's in speech communication and a PhD in folklore. A national speaker and writer, Jean is the staff trainer for the Corona Family History Center and President of both the Corona Gen Soc and the So Calif Chapter of APG. Jean’s podcasts on social history are available at genjourneys.podbean.com. She has been a Jamboree presenter since 2010.

Michael L. Strauss, AG®, is a nationally recognized genealogical speaker. He has a BA in History and is a United States Coast Guard veteran. He is also a qualified expert witness in Court in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Additionally, he is a faculty member at SLIG, GRIP, and IGHR where he serves as the course coordinator.
