A Special Thank You From SCGS Jamboree

The Jamboree Committee would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the Genetic Genealogy, and Jamboree 2021 Virtual conferences.

Thank you, Attendees!
You are what makes the conference both exceptional and memorable. Without you, there wouldn't be a Jamboree. Whether you viewed us from near or far through the wonders of technology, Thank You!

Thank you, Speakers!
For generously sharing your knowledge, research experiences and tips, your time, and your sense of humor. You continuously lead by example and inspire genealogists of all experience levels to learn more, expand our vision of what family history research is and should be, all the while reminding us to be open to all possibilities in life and in research. Speakers, Thank You!

Thank you, Exhibitors!
For showcasing the products and services that make research so rewarding, for preserving records and making them accessible online, and for the books that we just can't give up even in the digital age. For the societies that give us opportunities to learn, share and meet others who share our passion for family history. Exhibitors, Thank You!

Thank you, Sponsors!
For your generous support of Jamboree. We are very grateful for the support of all of our sponsors. Jamboree extends special thanks to Ancestry, our main sponsor, and to MyHeritage, for sponsoring Closed Captioning.

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to all the Jamboree Volunteers!
It takes hundreds and hundreds of hours of volunteer time to produce Jamboree each year. Some volunteers work year-round to plan the events, and others work an hour or two before or at the conference. Every hour magically contributes to making Jamboree special for everyone.

Sincerely,
The SCGS Board of Directors

Helpful Hints and Tips
Jamboree Mobile App

JamboFREE
Thursday sessions are free to the public as part of the SCGS mission to "...provide instruction in accepted and effective research techniques."

Pink and Blue Sheets
The most important tool you will use during the weekend. Legal-sized pink (Jamboree) or blue (Genetic Genealogy and Family History) sheets give you the full conference schedule, information on parking, scanning, book signings, food and a map of the Marriott.

Syllabus
All paid registered attendees receive a free digital syllabus that includes all three conferences. Printed copies are available for purchase while quantities last. Syllabus handouts are available on the Jamboree App when authorized by the speaker. Copyright laws apply.

Bag Inserts -  Don’t throw away those Show Specials!
We’ve asked every Exhibitor to offer you a show special that beats anything you can get on the internet.  Many have put their show specials on their conference bag flyers. So, don’t just chuck those papers in the nearest bin!  Take a moment to see who has the special you’ve been waiting for … maybe one you haven’t thought of yet!

Get Social!
  • Social Media - Join the fun on Twitter using #Jamboree2018, or #SCGS2018 @scgsgenealogy, or post to the Jamboree Facebook page. We love Jamboree selfies!
  • Social Media Lounge in the Exhibit Hall Perfect posting place! Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog post for important details!
  • Network, talk to your neighbors, the speakers, exhibitors, and vendors and say "hi". Don't forget to bring along plenty of business cards to exchange with everyone.

Volunteer
Jamboree volunteers are a special lot. They have devoted time and effort to bring you the best conference possible. Stop by the Volunteer station to join in the fun! If it weren't for the volunteers, there wouldn't be a Jamboree!

Research Database Tech Zone
Explore some of the most popular paid subscription websites for FREE! Stop by the Tech Research Zone in the Jamboree Research Hallway Friday, June 1st, between 9am - 6pm and Saturday, June 2nd between 9am - 4:30 pm and take a test drive.

Seating Policy
Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. Seats cannot be saved within 3 minutes of the start of a session. Once a session is full to capacity, no one will be allowed to enter (fire marshall rules).

Be Kind
Jamboree draws family historians and genealogists, volunteers, speakers, exhibitors from all over. Everyone is trying to have a great conference. Treating one another as we would like to be treated will ensure that we all have a great experience.

The Jamboree Committee is here for you

EXTRA! EXTRA! Read All About It! Research Assistance is One of the Best Ways to Vault Your Genealogy Brick Wall!

by Jean Wilcox Hibben; PhD, MA

By now, you have probably heard or read about Research Assistance at Jamboree. Jamboree, along with the Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, has offered this unique option for Jamboree registrants for the past five years and we are ready to go again for year six!

Not every assistant/consultant is a professional. Not every one is a member of SCCAPG or even APG. Few are Board Certified or Accredited. But every volunteer, desiring to help others, knows something about genealogy that others don’t. It might be something minor, like how to get started; it might be something major, like where to find a repository in a foreign country; it might be anything in between. The one thing these people have in common is a true desire to assist others; to “pay it forward,” just as they were assisted throughout their genealogy experiences. If you see yourself in that description, we need YOU. Please consider signing up as a consultant and listing your specialty: very general (such as “basic genealogy” or “beginning genealogy”) or more specific (such as “Union Civil War Research” or “technology for genealogists” or “German translating”). The more specific you are, the better folks can prepare to bring what they need when they meet with you.

And are you one of the many (like the over 100 people helped in 2016) who needs some one-on-one time with a person who knows more than you do about some aspect of genealogical research? Or maybe someone who could use a fresh set of eyes to look at your research problem and work you’ve done to date? Check out the consultants listed on the website and sign up where you think you will get the best help. If no one is listed for your unique issue, consider stopping by the Research Assistance rooms in the Tech Hallway during the weekend as we accept walk-ins for both consultants and patrons. We will do our best to provide you with a bit of guidance, a recommendation of a professional genealogist, a list of possible websites, or maybe some direction to one of the vendors on site in the exhibit hall. (Don’t forget to bring your materials with you to get the best help possible – pedigree charts, copies of documents, family group sheets, copies of communications, etc. We will have Internet access so bringing your laptop or tablet with the needed information is also an option. Consultation time slots are only 20 minutes long, so please come as organized as possible.)

The on-line sign-up is at the link below and the sign-ups for both consultants and patrons will be closed on Thursday afternoon, June 8th. After that time, come by the room to get on the list.

Research Assistance begins its schedule at 1pm Friday, June 9th, but someone should be in the room at noon that day to help sign folks in or match consultants with patrons where it has not already been done on-line.

Do we promise 100% success? No. But we do promise 100% effort towards success.
