Jamboree 2016: Thursday Workshop - What Next? Workshop for Developing Step‐by‐Step Research Plans

Guest post by Paula Stuart‐Warren, CG®, FMGS, FUGA 

Setting up a research plan is not something to be done late at night when your mind has already decided it needs sleep! Yet, it’s easier than you think. Where do you go next with those documents, letters, wills, deeds, obituaries, family stories, and other items you have found or that were sent by your aunt? Often we make this seem a more daunting task than it needs to be. During this session we will work on some specific projects and compile that step-by-step research plan. Students always leave with the comment that “making a research plan is easier than I thought!”

Then we will do exercises to familiarize ourselves with the research planning and make a plan of attack to get from the basic information to documented family history. The research plan serves as an itemized list of “what to do next” steps that evolve from “what you have found already.” It covers the results of your analysis, defines those step-by-step research tasks, where to accomplish each, and needs to be flexible depending on what you do or do not find. The analysis of known information, the recognition of gaps in family details, and the creation of research goals form the basis for excellence in the family history quest. There is a secret teaching component to this workshop that is only shared with the registrants. 

Registrants will break into small groups to work on one of the session projects. Each group will have the same document, analyze it, draft a short research plan, and appoint a secretary to report their suggestions to the entire audience. The variety of research steps that evolve demonstrate the value of assisting each other with our tough or brick wall research problems.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA

Paula Stuart-Warren is an internationally recognized genealogical educator, researcher and consultant focused on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, and analyzing records. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, lectured at National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences since the early 1990's, and in many states and Canada. 2015 is her fourth year with the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.

A former officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists, former board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, past President of the Northland Chapter of the APG, she is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies. She co-chaired the FGS 2001, 2011, and 2013 conferences. She is descended from eight ancestral countries and has researched family connections across the U.S. and Canada including the Southern lines of her father-in-law.

She has researched on-site at the U.S. National Archives (multiple locations), Family History Library, Minnesota Historical Library, Wisconsin Historical Society, New England Historic Genealogy Society, California State Archives, and other state and local repositories from coast to coast. Paula has written for FGS FORUM, NGS Magazine, New England Ancestors, Minnesota Genealogist, findmypast.com, and currently publishes her own blog, Paula's Genealogical Eclectica  (http://paulastuartwarren.blogspot.com).

Paula is a board-certified genealogist working full-time in genealogical and historical research, lecturing, consulting, and writing. Paula has researched at the National Archives (multiple locations), Family History Library, Minnesota Historical Society, Wisconsin Historical Society, DAR Library, and many other repositories across the U.S. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, coordinates a Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh course, lectures at National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences, and in many states and Canada.

A former officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists and former board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, she is past President of the Northland Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, a former officer of APG, a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and was co-chair of the August 2013 FGS Conference being held in Fort Wayne. She has written for Ancestry Magazine, FGS FORUM, NGS Magazine, New England Ancestors, Minnesota Genealogist, findmypast.com, and her blog, Paula’s Genealogical Eclectica. Her articles and lectures focus on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, analyzing records, Midwest, and Native Americans. She is descended from eight ancestral countries and has connections to many U.S. states and Canadian provinces. Part of her family settled in the Los Angeles area in the early 1900s.

Paula is an award-winning family historian who loves to interact with her audiences, and is a energetic, yet clear and concise speaker with a bit of added humor. Her syllabus material assists you both during and after the presentations.
