Michael L Strauss, AG® 

Michael L. Strauss, AG®, is a nationally recognized genealogical speaker. He has a BA in History and is a United States Coast Guard veteran. He is also a qualified expert witness in Court in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Additionally he is a faculty member at SLIG, GRIP, and IGHR where he serves as the course coordinator for all three military courses and is featured on Lisa Louise Cooke's "Genealogy Gems" Podcast featured with the "Military Minutes" episodes.

Jamboree 2016: Librarian's Bootcamp - JamboFREE Friday

Are you a librarian looking for a way to help patrons with their genealogical research? Want to learn how to maximize your research time and get the most out of our libary experience?

We are particularly excited about this year’s Boot Camp courses, which were developed specially for Jamboree 2016. Our exceptional speakers, George G. Morgan and Drew Smith, MLS, aka The Genealogy Guys(SM) podcasters, know genealogy from both sides of the reference desk.  

Introduction to Genealogy for Librarians and Patrons
Many librarians have little to no training in genealogy before being assigned to help genealogy patrons. This session provides a thorough overview of the genealogy research process and resources for librarians, and provides a framework for getting beginning family history researchers started.

Teaching Your Patrons How to Use FamilySearch.org
FamilySearch.org is the free, comprehensive genealogical website of the LDS Church. This session will cover its use by librarians and their patrons, including digitized records (both with and without indexing), digitized books, a shared family tree, self-paced online courses, and a wiki with thousands of research articles.

Promoting Newspaper Resources to Genealogists
Digitized and indexed newspapers at free and commercial websites are a critical part of genealogical research. Librarians need to be aware of these sites and instruct patrons on their use. This session will cover such sites as Chronicling America, Google News Archive, NewsBank products, Newspapers.com, NewspaperArchive.com, and findmypast.com, among others.

Librarians Boot Camp is scheduled for Friday morning, June 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. It's just one of a number of JamboFREE activities, which means it is open to the public and available to attend at no cost. Jamboree 2016: FREE Librarian's Boot Camp - Friday 3 June

The Southern California Genealogical Society announces a FREE three hour Librarian's Genealogy Boot Camp on Friday morning, June 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Boot Camp will be held in conjunction with the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, which will take place Friday through Sunday, June 3 to June 5, 2016, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport. After the Boot Camp ends at noon, attendees are invited to the opening of the Exhibit Hall as our guests.

We are thrilled to bring the popular Boot Camp back to Jamboree and are particularly excited about the course specially designed for Jamboree 2016. Our exceptional speakers, George G. Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Drew Smith, MLS

Drew Smith is an Assistant Librarian with the Academic Services Unit of the University of South Florida (USF) Tampa Library. He has taught graduate-level courses in genealogical librarianship. He is a past Director of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (2008-2013), past chair of the FGS Technology Committee, and currently the "Rootsmithing with Technology" columnist for the FGS FORUM magazine. He is past Secretary of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). Drew is President of the Florida Genealogical Society of Tampa and has served on the board of the Florida State Genealogical Society. He administers the GENEALIB electronic mailing list with over 1200 genealogy librarians as subscribers, a list he founded in 1996.

Drew has been the co-host of The Genealogy Guys Podcast since September 2005, and together with George G. Morgan has produced over 270 one-hour episodes. Drew is the author of the book Social Networking for Genealogists, published in 2009 by Genealogical Publishing Company, and with George is co-author of the book Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques, published in 2013 by McGraw-Hill. Drew has written extensively for NGS NewsMagazine (now NGS Magazine), Genealogical Computing, and Digital Genealogist.

Drew holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Clemson University, and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from USF.

The Speakers:

George G. Morgan is president of Aha! Seminars, Inc., a Tampa Bay-based company that has been providing training to library personnel and genealogists since 1996. George is an internationally recognized genealogy expert who presents at local, state, national, international genealogical conferences, on cruises, and in webinars.

George is the prolific author of eleven books and literally hundreds of articles for magazines, journals, newsletters, in genealogical publications, and at online sites in the U.S., Canada, the U.K, Singapore, and elsewhere. McGraw-Hill published the third edition of his How to Do Everything: Genealogy, in 2012, and published his eleventh book, Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques, co-authored with Drew Smith, in 2013.

He was VP of Membership for the Federation of Genealogical Societies from 2010-2013. He is a past president of International Society of Family History Writers and Editors (ISFHWE), and past director of the Florida State Genealogical Society and the Florida Genealogical Society (Tampa).

Drew Smith, MLS, is a librarian at the University of South Florida (USF) Tampa Library. Since 2007 he has been President of the Florida Genealogical Society (Tampa), and since July 2013 has been Chair of the Family History Information Standards Organisation.

Drew is co-author of the 2013 McGraw-Hill book Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques, author of the 2009 GPC book Social Networking for Genealogists, and “Rootsmithing with Technology” columnist for the Federation of Genealogical Societies’ FORUM magazine. He has written extensively for such magazines as NGS NewsMagazine (now NGS Magazine), Genealogical Computing, and Digital Genealogist. He has previously served on the boards of the Association of Professional Genealogists (as Secretary), the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and Florida State Genealogical Society (FSGS). He continues to administer the GENEALIB electronic mailing list with over 1200 genealogy librarians as subscribers, a list he founded in 1996.

The Southern California Genealogical Society produces the 45th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, which will be held June 6-8, 2014, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport. The pre-event is "Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2014" a day-long conference exploring the use of DNA in family history.
