Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Stephen P. Morse, PhD

Stephen Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website, for which he has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, the Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society, the first-ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists, and two awards that he cannot pronounce from Polish genealogical societies.

In his other life, Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today's Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 30 years ago.

Case Study: Genealogy of Renee Kaufman
This lecture presents a case study using One-Step Webpages as well as other websites to develop a family history. It illustrates how, with a minimal amount of initial information, an entire genealogy can be obtained. It also shows how to obtain records in spite of name misspellings, and how to avoid accepting wrong information.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Drew Smith, MLS

Drew Smith is an Assistant Librarian with the Academic Services Unit of the University of South Florida (USF) Tampa Library. He has taught graduate-level courses in genealogical librarianship. He is a past Director of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (2008-2013), past chair of the FGS Technology Committee, and currently the "Rootsmithing with Technology" columnist for the FGS FORUM magazine. He is past Secretary of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). Drew is President of the Florida Genealogical Society of Tampa and has served on the board of the Florida State Genealogical Society. He administers the GENEALIB electronic mailing list with over 1200 genealogy librarians as subscribers, a list he founded in 1996.

Drew has been the co-host of The Genealogy Guys Podcast since September 2005, and together with George G. Morgan has produced over 270 one-hour episodes. Drew is the author of the book Social Networking for Genealogists, published in 2009 by Genealogical Publishing Company, and with George is co-author of the book Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques, published in 2013 by McGraw-Hill. Drew has written extensively for NGS NewsMagazine (now NGS Magazine), Genealogical Computing, and Digital Genealogist.

Drew holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Clemson University, and a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from USF.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Walt Sturrock

Walt is an artist, photographer, and instructor for 30+ years. He has illustrated 6 children's books for publishers Unicorn Publishing Inc, the National Humane Society, and Walt Disney Publishing. He has taught painting, graphic design, and computer graphics in several schools and companies in New Jersey.

Walt moved to California in 1995 when he started with Disney Animation on the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He worked there for 14 years as an instructor, Manager of Computer Training, and Technical Director. He currently works as a webmaster, instructor, and technical illustrator for a leading Aerospace company.

He began his genealogy work as an offshoot to his love of history, photo restoration, and family. In an effort to make sense of the thousands of photos that his family was giving him to scan and restore, he created a comprehensive family tree and database that he could reference when identifying the 100,000+ photos in his collection. He is now "addicted" to genealogy research and has become the family historian.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA

Paula Stuart-Warren is an internationally recognized genealogical educator, researcher and consultant focused on unusual resources, manuscripts, methodology, and analyzing records. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, lectured at National Genealogical Society and Federation of Genealogical Societies conferences since the early 1990's, and in many states and Canada. 2015 is her fourth year with the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.

A former officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists, former board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, past President of the Northland Chapter of the APG, she is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Genealogical Societies. She co-chaired the FGS 2001, 2011, and 2013 conferences. She is descended from eight ancestral countries and has researched family connections across the U.S. and Canada including the Southern lines of her father-in-law.

She has researched on-site at the U.S. National Archives (multiple locations), Family History Library, Minnesota Historical Library, Wisconsin Historical Society, New England Historic Genealogy Society, California State Archives, and other state and local repositories from coast to coast. Paula has written for FGS FORUM, NGS Magazine, New England Ancestors, Minnesota Genealogist, findmypast.com, and currently publishes her own blog, Paula's Genealogical Eclectica  (http://paulastuartwarren.blogspot.com).

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Craig Roberts Scott MA, CG, FUGA

Craig Roberts Scott, MA, CG, FUGA is the author of The 'Lost Pensions': Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838 (Revised) and Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, Inventory 14 (Revised). He has authored 14 books and several articles in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Family Chronicle and other genealogical publications. He is the President and CEO of Heritage Books, Inc., a genealogical publishing firm with over 5,300 titles in print. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than 30 years, he specializes in records of the National Archives, especially those that relate to the military.

He was the Clan Scott Genealogist (1985-2000). He is a member of the Company of Military Historians, on the editorial board of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, and is a Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists. He has been a faculty member for several years of the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, Samford University and the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, and recently the Genealogical Institute of Pittsburgh. He was awarded the Grahame T. Smallwood, Jr. Award in 2008 and UGA Silver Tray Award in 2009. He became a fellow, Utah Genealogical Association in 2014.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Angela Walton-Raji

Angela Walton-Raji has a national reputation as genealogist, author and lecturer. Her book, Black Indian Genealogy Research, is the only book of its kind focusing on the unique Oklahoma Freedman Records. Beyond her public appearances, she hosts 3 blogs, 3 websites, and she hosts the ongoing African Roots Podcast. She is an alumnus of the National Institute of Genealogical Research, Samford Genealogy Institute and the Midwest African American Genealogy Institute (MAAGI). She has also served as a faculty member at Samford and MAAGI.

Ms. Walton-Raji has a strong online presence where she monitors several social media genealogy groups and recently authored a user's guide for the AfriGeneas Facebook group. She also has a strong presence on Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter.  She lives in Maryland, where she continues to research and write.

Have you submitted speaker proposals for the Southern California Genealogical Society 46th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree, to be held Friday through Sunday, June 5 - 7, 2015 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel, Burbank, California? The Genetic Genealogy: DNA Plus! on Thursday, June 4, 2015 will include a full day of DNA presentations and in-depth workshops.  

This Call for Presentations also includes the 2015 Jamboree Extension Series webinar program.  This webinar program offers two sessions per month (the first Saturday and the third Wednesday) to an international audience.

The 2015 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree theme is Genealogy FANfare! celebrating the use of the friends, associates and neighbors (FANs) of our elusive ancestors in order to aid in our research. 

We look forward to receiving proposals for lectures and workshops on a variety of topics for an audience skill level ranging from newbie to advanced, including young people.   We will work with speakers who have conflicting commitments so that they may participate in Jamboree.

Presentations will be accepted through the online Speaker Portal by October 10, 2014.  If you have previously submitted less than 6 presentations and wish to submit others, please do so!  Get started now to be considered!  All other dates remain the same.  Selected speakers will be notified by November 15, 2014.  Further details are available in the Call for Presentations and it is suggested that you download the Submission Guidelines to assist in your preparation.
