Jamboree 2015 - Free Document and Photo Scanning by Ancestry

Digitize Your Family Records
Free to the Public

Ancestry.com is excited to provide the opportunity to have your family photos and documents scanned at the conference, for free, on their professional scanning equipment. It’s a unique opportunity to have your family history records digitized!  In past years, scanning has been one of the most popular activities at Jamboree. We know you'll be happy to take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

Make an appointment to reserve your scanning time slot. 15-minute scanning sessions on Friday, June 5, through Sunday, June 7. Click on the link above to go to the sign-up area and choose your preferred time slot. Ancestry accepts three patrons during each time slot. If a time slot does not appear on the list, that means that all three appointments for that period have been claimed.

NOTE: If you have participated in scanning in prior years, you'll notice a difference in the reservation process. This year, you won't need to sign up again once you get to the Marriott.  

Walk-ins may be allowed, depending on availability of scanning equipment. Don't risk it, though; make an appointment to reserve your time slot.

Scanning Hours are as follows.  

• Friday 12:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
• Saturday 9:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., lunch from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
• Sunday 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Scanning will be located in Producer A/B in the High-Tech Hallway, which is across the hall from the elevators in the East tower of the Marriott. (Look for "mutant bowl of broccoli.") Signs will point the way.

Important Details from the 
Ancestry Scanning Team

Document types accepted

• We can scan any document type, but the maximum size supported is 18" by 18." Any type of photograph, including tintypes, is accepted. Unfortunately we can not scan slides.
• Fragile or historical documents, photographs, bound books or albums and similar will be photographed.
• Copyright and re-publishing rights for the material are strictly the responsibility of patrons, but we reserve the right to reject any document for any reason.
• There is always a possibility that damage to older, more fragile documents may occur during the scanning process. Ancestry urges patrons to use their best judgment when choosing documents to be scanned.

Document preparation

• Before your scanning session, please remove all staples, pins, and fasteners as well as any tape or sticky material from your photos and documents. These items can harm the scanning equipment.
• Please sort all of your documents and pictures by size, smallest to largest, before entering your session. This will enable our scanners to more effectively finish your documents in the time allotted.
• Photos mounted in an album will be digitized as a single image. Bound books do not need to be unassembled, but can be quite slow to digitize. Material stored in sleeves should be removed prior to the scanning session; materials remaining in sleeves will be digitized with the sleeves in place.

Scheduling

• The 15-minute time slot will include any document preparation not completed prior to the scanning session, so proper document preparation is crucial (see above).
• Generally we can scan 25-50 documents per person in a 15-minute slot, more if documents and photos are newer and/or not fragile.
• The scanned files will be saved to a thumb drive provided by Ancestry and given to attendees for their own use. 

Jamboree 2015 - "Creating a Digital Genealogy Scrapbook" Workshop

Jamboree will feature special workshops on Thursday and Friday. While the Tim Janzen and Tom Jones Friday workshops have closed, we still have room in the Thursday sessions.

Barb Groth's "Creating a Digital Genealogy Scrapbook" four-hour session will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, break for lunch, then resume 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

For those who have already registered, and those "thinking about it," Barb has sent along this information:

This workshop is designed to help you organize your research and begin the process of designing and developing your own Digital Family History album using your own photos, documents, journaling, etc.

You will need to bring your laptop as the process can not be completed on a smart phone or a tablet. The workshop examples are performed on a PC however, if you use either a PC or an Apple computer you will be able to use the information in the workshop.

We will be using software called "ScrapRoom" and you will receive a free trial sample of the program. If you are interested, you will be able to purchase the software at a discount. If you have Adobe Photoshop Elements, that can adapt what I will be teaching for your photo-editing software, however, it is much more complicated and it will only work on a PC. You will also be receiving a discount on templates for your use so you will not need to design your digital album from scratch.

You should have some (not necessarily all) of the following information saved to your desktop in a single folder:

• Family photos ( do not use Instagram photos - each should be a minimum of 300 dpi)
• Documents, such as census records, church records, naturalization, military, newspaper articles, etc.
• Scanned memorabilia - medals, etc.
• Maps or photos of places and/or locations your family came from or resided in
• A few Word documents with brief typed information about the family or person you are including in the album

We will be discussing the organization of photos, elements and documents on your computer, the ScrapRoom Software and its components, the organization of the album and then we will begin to design and develop the actual pages of the album. It is unlikely that we will complete the album but you will be able to continue to complete the program on your own. You can also purchase the Guide that has been written to help assist you with step by step directions, if you so choose. It will be available for sale at the Jamboree.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Walt Sturrock

Walt is an artist, photographer, and instructor for 30+ years. He has illustrated 6 children's books for publishers Unicorn Publishing Inc, the National Humane Society, and Walt Disney Publishing. He has taught painting, graphic design, and computer graphics in several schools and companies in New Jersey.

Walt moved to California in 1995 when he started with Disney Animation on the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He worked there for 14 years as an instructor, Manager of Computer Training, and Technical Director. He currently works as a webmaster, instructor, and technical illustrator for a leading Aerospace company.

He began his genealogy work as an offshoot to his love of history, photo restoration, and family. In an effort to make sense of the thousands of photos that his family was giving him to scan and restore, he created a comprehensive family tree and database that he could reference when identifying the 100,000+ photos in his collection. He is now "addicted" to genealogy research and has become the family historian.

Not all scans are created equal, though, and it's important to do the job properly to maximize the information that you and others will be able to extract and interpret.A decent scan, well documented with ancillary information about the photograph's location, history, provenance, etc., is worth every extra minute spent on it.

A resident of New Zealand, Brett is our first speaker from Down Under. A geologist by training, he currently works in the museum industry as a collections assistant, artifact photographer, researcher and photographic historian. As he explained, "My passion is old photographs, the photographers who took them, the equipment and technologies they used, the people and scenes in the photos, and the stories behind them."

Jamboree Photo Contest Winners

As we mentioned in this blog in early April, 1000memories.com sponsored a photo contest for Jamboree. Photos were submitted for three categories:

• Pre-1900 Ancestor Photo
• Most Humorous Ancestor Photo
• Best-Dressed Ancestor Photo

 The winner in each category wins $220 worth of professional scanning provided by 1000memories and their business partner ScanCafe.
A total of 40 people participated in the event, including those who submitted and voted on 102 photos, which will be saved indefinitely in the Internet Archive. All photos can be viewed here.

Pre-1900 Ancestor Photo, submitted by Connie Wills. "Taken in 1862 in Strasbourg area, Alsace, France, before Dec. 1842 with The Bieth Family. Margaretha Bieth, standing behind her parents and brother and sister, was my great-great grandmother just before her marriage. This is a copy; the original was a Daguerrotype, a process which had just gone public in 1839."

Most Humorous Ancestor Photo was submitted by DeeDee, "Taken in the 1920s in Venice Beach with My Great Aunts Katherine, Jean, and Lillian. The 3 girls my great-aunts, are barely balancing on the pillar, they told the family that you can see that there were "sharks" in the water around them."

Best-Dressed Ancestor Photo, submitted by Katherine Zollman. "Taken in 1893 in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois with Franklin Benjamin Snyder."

Helpful Tips

If you don’t have digital copies of your photos, you can scan your photos using ShoeBox by 1000memories - a free photo-scanning app for iPhone and Android. If you don’t have a smartphone or scanner, simply take a photo of the photo with a digital camera and upload it to the Jamboree shoebox.
