Jamboree 2016: Research Assistance Wrap-up

What a wild and stimulating experience it was managing Research Assistance at Jamboree. Over an hour before we opened we had walk-ins hoping to secure a client spot with our Research Assistants. The Southern California Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists sponsors Research Assistance for the SCGS Jamboree and helped 92 clients over three days. Research Assistants came primarily from the Association of Professional Genealogists but included others who came in ready to help.  

We asked those who were pleased with their experience to consider donating to the Save the War of 1812 Pensions and collected $115 for that purpose. 

Many people come together to make Research Assistance a success. I want to thank Jean Wilcox Hibben, co-chair for Research Assistance, Lise Harding from SCGS, the many volunteers at Jamboree who helped keep us running and the following volunteer Research Assistants who gave generously of their time. I hope I didn’t miss any of you.

Giving to the Future by Preserving the Past

It's more than just the Jamboree 2016 conference theme.. it is a call to arms.

As family historians and genealogists, we are always looking - for sources, images and documents that help to tell the story of our ancestors.

Jamboree 2015 - Research Assistance Review

It’s hard to believe that it’s over. Well, that it has been over for nearly two weeks . . . seems like just yesterday that we were checking in folks needing a little genealogy boost from the many people who volunteered to help at Research Assistance. In all, there were about 75 problem sessions covered by our team of Research Assistants (some of our “clients” came more than once). Most people got ideas of where to go next, how to approach a difficult situation, or even an actual problem resolution.

We asked those who were pleased with their experience to consider donating to Save the War of 1812 Pensions and had a “collection bucket” for that purpose. We collected $58 and that is being forwarded to the project from the Southern California Chapter of the Assoc. of Professional Genealogists, the organization that sponsored Research Assistance. But those who helped out were not necessarily members of that organization – they came from all over and gave their time liberally; we can’t thank them enough. But we can recognize them here:

Correction: SCGS Takes Up the Preserve the Pensions Challenge

(NOTE: This post was revised on 6/1 to accurately represent the amount of the matched donation. Thanks Sandra for the correction. Math has never been good to me.)

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) issued a challenge to all of its member societies to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project.

The Board of Directors has enthusiastically supported this project and has taken FGS up on its challenge. The Board voted to match the first $2500, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, for donations made through SCGS.

Let's take a look at the effect of a $50 donation made through SCGS.
Your donation = $50
SCGS Match = $50 + $50 = $100
FGS will Match the combined amount =  $100 + $100 = $200
Ancestry with Match the combined amount =  $200 + $200 = $400!


I'm sure that we'll have opportunities to "pass the hat" at Jamboree, but in case you'd like to get a head start, you can donate in several different ways:

Through PayPal - Donate the amount you choose. Please indicate that the donation is for Preserve the Pensions - SCGS.

Through the SCGS website - Donations are set to be in $10 increments. You can donate any amount in $10 increments. To donate $100 for example, just order "10" donations at $10 each.

Send your check to SCGS, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, CA 91504. Indicate "SCGS Preserve the Pensions" in the notes area.
