Giving to the Future by Preserving the Past

It's more than just the Jamboree 2016 conference theme.. it is a call to arms.

As family historians and genealogists, we are always looking - for sources, images and documents that help to tell the story of our ancestors.

Please join the Federation of Genealogical Societies, Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, the Southern California Genealogical Society and Genealogy Jamboree by supporting the ongoing effort to preserve the fragile and precious 7.2 million images contained within the over 150,000 War of 1812 pension files.

Your donation will help to not only digitally preserve the images, but it will also help make them freely accessible to all for future generations, ensuring that the sacrifices of our brave forefathers will never be forgotten.

Correction: SCGS Takes Up the Preserve the Pensions Challenge

(NOTE: This post was revised on 6/1 to accurately represent the amount of the matched donation. Thanks Sandra for the correction. Math has never been good to me.)

The Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) issued a challenge to all of its member societies to create a matching program for donations to the Preserve the Pensions project.

The Board of Directors has enthusiastically supported this project and has taken FGS up on its challenge. The Board voted to match the first $2500, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, for donations made through SCGS.

Let's take a look at the effect of a $50 donation made through SCGS.
Your donation = $50
SCGS Match = $50 + $50 = $100
FGS will Match the combined amount =  $100 + $100 = $200
Ancestry with Match the combined amount =  $200 + $200 = $400!


I'm sure that we'll have opportunities to "pass the hat" at Jamboree, but in case you'd like to get a head start, you can donate in several different ways:

Through PayPal - Donate the amount you choose. Please indicate that the donation is for Preserve the Pensions - SCGS.

Through the SCGS website - Donations are set to be in $10 increments. You can donate any amount in $10 increments. To donate $100 for example, just order "10" donations at $10 each.

Send your check to SCGS, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, CA 91504. Indicate "SCGS Preserve the Pensions" in the notes area.

SCGS and Jamboree at RootsTech 2015 and FGS

 

Last week the Jamboree team traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to take part in the world's largest combined family history and genealogy conferences, FGS and RootsTech.  Over 20,000 people attended the historic event which featured world class speakers and a huge exhibit hall with hundreds of vendors and societies, including SCGS.

It was an exciting time, and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting our members, making new friends from all over the world, and visiting with the thousands of enthusiastic genealogy fans who stopped by our booth.  It was truly a chance to connect - to each other, to our shared love of family, and to our past.

Each day brought something new and exciting.  Headline speakers such as technology innovator and founder of Emotiv Tan Le, former First Lady Laura Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, the cast of Genealogy Roadshow, Global Family Reunion host A.J. Jacobs and entertainer Donny Osmond energized the crowds and inspired with their personal stories.   Entrepreneurs shared their talent and unique ideas at the first-annual Innovator Showdown, with StoryWorth winning first place, and several genealogy industry leaders announced new partnerships and products.  For those who were not able to attend, you can check out the RootsTech Video Archive here.

SCGS was fortunate to have a centrally located booth that allowed us to visit with everyone.  To all those who stopped by, Thank You.  You made the conference special for all of us.  We enjoyed talking about both the society and Jamboree, hearing about your discoveries and genealogical research plans, and loved that you shared your experience with us.

The fun was clearly evident at the Celebrate Your Heritage: Cultural Night. Even the Scottish Bagpipe and Drum band found it challenging to navigate through the exhibit hall!

One of the highlights: History came alive at the SCGS Booth!  Thanks to the character actors and to Tim Firkowski, The Genealogy Assistant, A Family History Detective.

Genealogists' Declaration of Rights - Sign at Jamboree

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

Calling all family historians to sign the Genealogists' Declaration of Rights next week at Jamboree.

The Board of Directors of the Southern California Genealogical Society strongly endorse this ambitious effort to protect the access to the birth, marriage, death and other records that are critical to successful searches for our ancestors.

Jamboree will dedicate an exhibit hall booth -- Booth 105, just inside the main door -- to collect signatures from California residents. Jamboree guests from other states will be encouraged to sign online.

Copies of the signature pages will be provided to the Records Preservation & Access Committee, a joint committee of the Federation of Genealogical Studies, National Genealogical Society, and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies.

"Our goal is to collect RPAC with 1000 signatures from the genealogists and family historians who attend the Family History and DNA and Jamboree events," explained David Burde, president of the Southern California Genealogical Society.

Jordan Jones, President of the National Genealogical Society (NGS), a sponsoring member of the Records Preservation and Access Committee (RPAC), announced the Genealogists’ Declaration of Rights before a crowd of more than 2,500 genealogists attending the Opening Session of the NGS 2014 Family History Conference in Richmond, Virginia, on 7 May 2014. Jordan will be speaking at Jamboree on Friday afternoon.

Over the next few months, the Declaration will travel to the 34th IAJGS Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Salt Lake City, Utah, 27 July–1 August 2014 and the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference in San Antonio, Texas, 27–30 August 2014. Jamboree is the first to feature the Declaration at a genealogy conference since it was introduced at NGS.
