Jamboree 2016: Thursday Workshop - Understanding Gothic German by Learning to Write It

Photo provided by Jean Wilcox Hibben, Ph.D., MA, CG®
Researching your German heritage? Are you struggling to understand both the language of the documents and the content the records contain?

Join us on Thursday, June 2 for an in-depth look at the nuances of Gothic German Script.

Gothic script was used all over Western Europe from 1150 and continued in use in Germany until the 20th century. Learn to read and write Gothic script in order to be able to gather information of genealogical and historical importance.

This workshop will start off with some samples of what the German Gothic Script (AKA Kurrent) looks like. We will discuss what types of records are done in German script and what one can expect the records to say. The second half of the workshop will be spent actually writing, with emphasis on the alphabet, letter formations, and letter formation combinations. Once you gain a better understanding of how documents are written, it becomes much easier to read and understand the documents you find as you research.

Thursday, June 2, 2016  10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Th-A   Understanding Gothic German by Learning to Write It: You, Too, Can Read Those Record by Jean Wilcox Hibben, Ph.D., MA, CG®

Workshop attendees will need to bring lined paper and pencil to practice writing German Gothic Script. Limited to 40 participants
