The 2019 SCGS Research Trip was a great success.  Nineteen members spent a week researching at the Family History Library.  

This years trip will be from Sunday, August 23 to Sunday, August 30, 2020.  

Accommodations will be at the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, next door to the Family History Library and across the street from Temple Square.  The cost for the 7-night stay is $772 for a standard double room or $853 for a deluxe double room.  The fee includes the hotel room and taxes and transportation to and from the Salt Lake City International Airport.  All participants are responsible for their own transportation arrangements to Salt Lake City.

As of October 1, 2017, the SCGS Library continues our affiliation with the LDS Family History Library by offering full computer access to all of the digitalized records that FamilySearch offers through their website familysearch.org. What a great benefit, since the microfilms are no longer available for rent!

 

How does that work? Come to the SCGS library and use our library computers to unlock all the digitalized records found on FamilySearch.org. But there's a catch--you have to be a member of SCGS to use our computers.

 

Not a member? Come in and join SCGS, and you will receive additional members-only benefits and discounts (such as discounted rates at Jamboree 2018!).

It's more than just the Jamboree 2016 conference theme.. it is a call to arms.

As family historians and genealogists, we are always looking - for sources, images and documents that help to tell the story of our ancestors.

Please join the Federation of Genealogical Societies, Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, the Southern California Genealogical Society and Genealogy Jamboree by supporting the ongoing effort to preserve the fragile and precious 7.2 million images contained within the over 150,000 War of 1812 pension files.

Your donation will help to not only digitally preserve the images, but it will also help make them freely accessible to all for future generations, ensuring that the sacrifices of our brave forefathers will never be forgotten.

Jamboree 2016 Speaker Spotlight: Kathy Warburton

Kathy Warburton has been researching her own family history, as well as helping others research theirs, for over 30 years. She begin working for FamilySearch in 1987 and has held a variety of positions there, including assisting patrons with British Research at the Family History Library. She is currently a Public Outreach manager.

Jamboree 2016 Headliner Spotlight: Michael Provard

Michael Provard has been involved in the genealogy and family history community for more than 29 years. He began his career as a library attendant at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. As an employee of FamilySearch, he has worked at the Library in acquisitions and photoduplication, at the Granite Mountain Records Vault, and for 10 years supporting the 2,000 family history centers in North America. In 2012, he joined the Marketing team as an operational and logistical coordinator. He has taught many classes to local groups and at national genealogical conferences. He specializes in beginning research, Midwest and British research.

Jamboree 2016 Headliner Spotlight: David Rencher, AG, CG, FIGRS, FUGA,

David Rencher, AG, CG, FIGRS, FUGA, is employed by the Family History Department in Salt Lake City as the Chief Genealogical Officer for FamilySearch. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1980 with a BA in Family and Local History. A professional genealogist since 1977, he holds credentials as both an Accredited and Certified genealogist. Since 1997, he serves as the Irish course coordinator and instructor for the Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research. He is a past-president of the Federation of Genealogical Societies and the Utah Genealogical Association. David is a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association and the Irish Genealogical Research Society, London and is currently an instructor for the British Institute where he also serves as the vice-president of the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History. He currently serves on the Board of the Federation of Genealogical Societies.

Jamboree - Meet the Speakers: Michael Provard

Mike Provard has been involved in the genealogy and family history community for more than 28 years. He began his career as a library attendant at the Family History Library. As an employee of FamilySearch he has worked at the Library in acquisitions and photoduplication, at the Granite Mountain Records Vault, and for 10 years supporting the 2,000 family history centers in North America. In 2012 he joined the Marketing team as an operations and logistical coordinator.

Mike has taught many classes to local groups and at national genealogical conferences. He specializes in beginning research, US Midwest and British research. He has a BFA degree in Photography from the University of Utah and is a semi-professional portrait and architectural photographer. He is in his 17th season singing with the Utah Symphony Chorus. He is married to Peggy Burger and they are the parents of four children. They reside in West Jordan, Utah.

Kathy Warburton has worked as a British Reference assistant at the Family History Library for 16 years and has been employed by FamilySearch for 26. Kathy grew up in a home where history and family history were emphasized. Ancestral stories were frequently shared at bedtime and at family gatherings, leading to a life-long love of family history. She studied family history and geography at Brigham Young University and has been doing family history research for nearly 30 years.

Attendee will get an overview of understanding, finding, and using civil registration records and indexes in the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) and Ireland. They will also learn tips on how to find difficult to find ancestors in these records and the process by which these records were created.
