SCGS Library Re-Opens on

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

We are so excited to open our doors and 

welcome back our members, non-members, 

family historians, and all genealogists into our library!

The days our library will be open  are as follows:
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays 

the first 2 Sundays of each month, 

& the 3rd and 4th Saturdays of each month. 

The hours: 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. 

We may expand these hours and days later on in the year, 

depending on the needs of our members 

and the availability of our beloved volunteers

 who staff the library. 

Special thanks to all of our members, family historians, 

and genealogists who waited so patiently 

for the library to open again. 

Some of our interest groups and other programs will return to in-person meetings at the library, while others will remain online. All groups and programs will return to the library when the  County of Los Angeles gives us the green light to do so.

Bounty land was offered as compensation for soldiers who fought in the Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War, but veterans of these wars didn’t simply take up residence on their land grants. Some did, but many people who weren’t veterans ended up with these lands. Learn about the laws, all the people who got involved, and where to find the records.

Annette Burke Lyttle is a professional genealogist specializing in online and repository research, and genealogical education and writing. She loves helping people find and tell their family stories.

Our country is one of religious diversity.  Except for the very early days in the colonies, there has never been a “state religion”.  Part 2 covers arrival in America.  A number of different religions and their beginnings will be discussed.  Part 1 covered the beginnings and causes in Europe that may have led to their emigration (presented on October 16, 2019).  SCGS Members may wish to log into the Member Only section for a refresher on Part 1.

Peggy Clemens Lauritzen, AG®, FOGS, has become a favorite speaker at conferences and webinars.  She serves as a Family History Center director, and is an instructor and author at Legacy Family Tree Webinars, Ancestry Academy, Family Tree University, and a columnist for Reminisce magazine.  She received the 2018 Laura G. Prescott Award for Exemplary Service to Professional Genealogy.

Documenting the migration paths of my grandfather and his 3 siblings (1904 - 1911) involved home sources, oral history interviews, passenger lists, naturalization documents, Russian-language directories, microfilm and other sources. You will learn how you can apply this process to identify your ancestor’s town of origin and the likely route between it and the departure port and more.

Jane Neff Rollins, MSPH, is a professional genealogist. Her genealogical education includes ProGen 29, SLIG, and the Forensic Genealogy Institute. She regularly translates Russian-language records and speaks at local, regional, and international genealogy conferences. She is a member of APG, NGS, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild.  Jane’s writing has appeared in RootsKey, a genealogy newsletter. Jane is also the author of “Health Care Navigation 101.”
