The 47th Annual  Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be held June 3-5, 2016. The Genetic Genealogy 2016 conference opens a full weekend of genealogy. If you're in the neighborhood, of course, we hope you will attend in person to take advantage of the full conference experience.

Jamboree 2016: Calling All Volunteers...Please Answer the Call!

The Countdown has begun!

21 days, 14 hours and a few seconds until showtime

All hands are on deck...and we need you!

These last few weeks leading up to the Genetic Genealogy Conference and Jamboree 2016 are (a) hectic and (b) crucial.  

We need your help!

We have over 500 time-slots that need to be filled over the course of four days, amounting to over 1500 volunteer hours.  

Yes, 1500 hours of volunteer time.  That's what's needed to make the magic happen at Jamboree - to stuff the registration bags, process registration, monitor the sessions, break down the boxes, set up the easels, tables and signs, collect the meal tickets, and do the many little jobs that add up to a successful conference.

Many of our loyal volunteers have already signed up to volunteer. If you have, thank you. If you haven't had the time to check out the online sign-up, don't worry... we've got you covered!  

On Saturday, May 14th, members of the SCGS Board of Directors and Jamboree Committee will hit the phones in an attempt to speak with everyone who has registered for Genetic Genealogy 2016 and/or Jamboree. If you're not home when we call, we'll leave a voicemail message. We won't take up a lot of your time but we will be glad to answer any questions while you have us on the phone.

No matter how long you've been doing genealogy, no matter where you live, no matter whether you're a member of SCGS or not - We need you!

• Go to the volunteer page on the Jamboree website, and click the sign-up link(s) for the day(s) you are interested in volunteering.  

• Register by giving us your name, email, phone number and, if you have one, your text message number. We won't use it unless we have to, promise.

• Check out all of the available slots and click on the "I want to volunteer" button to stake your claim.

Warren Blatt is the Managing Director of JewishGen (www.jewishgen.org). He is the author of Resources for Jewish Genealogy in the Boston Area (JGS of Greater Boston, 1996); and co-author (with Gary Mokotoff) of Getting Started in Jewish Genealogy (Avotaynu, 1999). Jamboree 2016: Calling All Volunteers - We Need YOU!

Passionate about family history and want to take part in an amazing opportunity? 

Join the Jamboree Volunteers and inspire others with your enthusiasm for all things genealogy!

The Genetic Genealogy 2016 and the 47th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree are just around the corner... and we need your help.

We have over 400 volunteer time slots totalling over 1500 hours to fill over the course of four days. 

Sounds like a lot, right? Well, when you add up the time required to stuff the registration bags, process registration, monitor the sessions, break down the boxes, set up the tables and signs, collect the meal tickets, provide tech zone and research assistance, and do the dozens of little jobs that add up to a huge effort and a successful conference.

But here's a not-so-secret secret - it's FUN!

Really! Where else but at a genealogy conference can you find like-minded people who love all things genealogy and education? From first-time attendees who jump right in with long-time members of the SCGS and Jamboree family to local residents and those who come from hundreds of miles away, every volunteer plays a crucial role in the success of Jamboree.

No matter how long you've been doing genealogy, no matter where you live, no matter whether you're a member of SCGS or not - We need you!

As in the past two years, we've streamlined the volunteer process to make it easy for you to sign up for what you would most like to do.  Get started by reviewing the session schedule and note the session numbers of the classes you want to monitor.  Then sign up for your slot.  The earlier you sign up, the more likely you are to get the time and task you want.

Colleen Greene, MLIS is a librarian, web developer, content strategist, and educator. Jamboree 2016 Speaker Spotlight: Charlotte Marie Bocage

Charlotte Marie Bocage is a full-time professional genealogist with more than four decades of experience. The 1977 TV series Roots inspired her to put a name to what she had been doing for so long and to formally continue her genealogical search. Charlotte has been sharing her knowledge since 1999. She is the Bloom and Bocage Family genealogist and historian, tracing her paternal family back to 19th Century Louisiana. Charlotte graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies.

Jamboree 2016: Sunday Workshop - Five Computer Programs to Simplify the Life of a Genealogist

Genealogists are always looking for easier, faster, or more efficient ways to get their family history organized, disseminated, easy to locate, etc. And there are a lot of programs you can purchase to help you with these tasks (genealogy, as with any activity, will eat up all the money you feed it). 

Butch Hibben, a technology specialist, is cheap. And he admits it openly and proudly. So he locates the types of programs that are not likely to be discovered by genealogists (because they often aren't marketed to genealogists or aren't noticed by them). 

These are NOT family history programs/apps/websites that he will be sharing; these come from other fields and are found using other descriptors (i.e., if you Google "genealogy," it is very unlikely any of these will pop up in your results, even on page 285 of X-thousand). But when you are introduced to them, you will surely discover that they are just what you need to make it easier to function as a genealogist. This applies to historians of any experience level. The majority are for PCs, not Macs, unfortunately (though at least one website will be introduced and that, of course can be used on either machine). 

Bring your laptop and follow along, applying your computer use to the apps and programs demonstrated, with Butch helping you if you get stuck. And even those who are still trying to get the hang of just using a computer as something more than a glorified typewriter are likely to discover the user-friendly quality of these helps.

FR006   Everything You Wanted to Know about African-American Genealogy but Were Afraid to Ask 
America's youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and are more diverse than the generations that preceded them, with 44.2 percent being part of a minority race or ethnic group. Many of these Millennials are identify as African American and have relatives who likely don't check the same racial designation box as them who are eager to help them trace their genealogy. Jamboree 2016 Thursday Workshop: Plotting Public Land Grants ‐ Hands‐on Workshop

Land records are usually not the first record that a family historian looks at to further their research. Why is that? Possibly it's because descriptions like the N½ NE¼ Sec. 26, T143N, R.49W, Fifth Principal Meridian, North Dakota are just too intimidating? Is it worth your time to learn how to read and plat these descriptions? Is it easy? Can you do it? The answer to all these questions is - yes.

Why would you want to use land records that are so much more difficult than census and vital records? These records will tell you exactly where your ancestor was located at a particular time. It will provide you with a list of neighbors for your ancestor's FAN club. It will allow you to read land descriptions in probate papers. It will help you locate the piece of property - today. 

Once you get into land records you may be surprised at how much genealogical information can be included with homestead records being surprisingly detailed about family information. 

Join me on Thursday from 2:15-4:15 in this hands-on Workshop - Platting Public Land Grants. Learn how to read land descriptions and plat the land. Learn how to use the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records site. Learn where else you can find land records and websites that will help you in platting the land.
