This presentation describes the two significant waves of German emigration to the U.S., (a) 1693-1790, and (b) from the early 1800s to 1914. Departure and arrival ports and their data are spotlighted along with key online sites in both the US and Germany. The major emigration/immigration books are also discussed.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mr. Baker is a Board-Certified Genealogist (CG) with a specialty in German research. He has written articles for the NGSQ, the NGS Magazine, and Der Blumenbaum, the Sacramento German Genealogy Society (SGGS) Quarterly. He has given over 100 genealogy presentations in the past three years at local, regional, and national events.

Kathy Warburton has been researching her own family history, as well as helping others research theirs, for over 30 years. She begin working for FamilySearch in 1987 and has held a variety of positions there, including assisting patrons with British Research at the Family History Library. She is currently a Public Outreach manager.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

This presentation describes the two significant waves of German emigration to the U.S., (a) 1693-1790, and (b) from the early 1800s to 1914. Departure and arrival ports and their data are spotlighted along with key online sites in both the US and Germany. The major emigration/immigration books are also discussed.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mr. Baker is a Board-Certified Genealogist (CG) with a specialty in German research. He has written articles for the NGSQ, the NGS Magazine, and Der Blumenbaum, the Sacramento German Genealogy Society (SGGS) Quarterly. He has given over 100 genealogy presentations in the past three years at local, regional, and national events.

Historians and genealogists alike have studied the Civil War for many years. It has become very popular to visit battlefields to watch reenactments and see where your ancestors fought. This lecture focuses on records and research strategies that will aid genealogists in obtaining more information about a Civil War soldier and the organizations in which they served.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Michael L. Strauss, AG, is a professional Accredited Genealogist and a nationally recognized genealogical lecturer. Strauss holds a BA in History and is a United States Coast Guard veteran and a licensed Private Investigator in Virginia. He is a qualified expert witness in court in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Additionally, he is an approved genealogist with the United States Army to locate DNA qualified persons MIA from Korea, Vietnam, and World War II. .

Participants will learn how to accurately deduce ancestors' identities and many aspects of their lives by digging below "surface information" in genealogical records and by combining information from several sources.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tom, who has edited the National Genealogical Society Quarterly since 2002, wrote the popular textbook Mastering Genealogical Proof. He started tracing his family history in 1963 and now works full-time as a genealogical researcher, writer, editor, and teacher. He teaches week-long genealogy courses at GRIP, IGHR, and SLIG. Audiences typically leave his lectures understanding that genealogical research can be more challenging than they had thought, but also that it can be much more fun.
