DNA WORKSHOPS - THREE AND ONE-HALF HOUR CLASSES 
Friday, May 31 intensive DNA workshops offered by presenters top in their field. These separate-fee events are offered as a benefit to Conference attendees. To register for a DNA workshop, you must be registered for at least one day of the Genealogy Jamboree or for the Genetic Genealogy Conference. These workshops run concurrently with JamboFREE. Genealogy workshops are offered Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and are designed to be intensive, hands-on, and interactive small group experiences. These separate-fee events are offered as a benefit to Conference attendees. To register for a Genealogy workshop, you must be registered for at least one day of the Genealogy Jamboree or for the Genetic Genealogy Conference. The Thursday workshops run concurrently with the Genetic Genealogy conference and the Saturday and Sunday workshops run concurrently with some Jamboree classes.

Devon Noel Lee 
Family History Fanatics 
Author, speaker, and family historian, Devon Noel Lee specializes in preserving and sharing family memories and motivating budding genealogists. With over 20 years experience in genealogy, she is a high energy speaker who is part of the Family History Fanatics channel which posts videos twice weekly on YouTube.

Marisa Louie Lee 
Marisa Louie Lee is a fifth-generation Chinese American from the San Francisco Bay Area. She is an avid researcher and genealogist who specializes in federal records. She currently works for the San Mateo County Libraries and previously served as an archivist at the National Archives. She also worked in programs and exhibitions at the Chinese Historical Society of America. Periodically she shares her research insights in training workshops and presentations on genealogy.

Dvorah Lewis, MLIS 
Sutro Library, California State Library 
Dvorah Lewis has been the Genealogy Librarian at Sutro Library for two years now. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Jewish Studies at UC Irvine and earned her Master's (MLIS) at UCLA. Her passion for archives and genealogy was inspired by an interview with her great Aunt Essie, the then eldest member of her family. She is excited to help genealogy researchers learn how to navigate the State Library’s extraordinary collections and resources.

Workshops

Genealogy is the second most popular hobby in our country. Regardless of our current levels, we all began learning at some point and understand that our learning must continue. In fact, the more we learn, the more we understand what we don't know.  Conferences and conventions have fun one-hour classes that are very informative, but the key to learning is in workshops. They provide a hands-on approach that accelerates learning due to the extended time of a TWO-HOUR session!

Student Genealogy Grant Invites Applications

The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Grant Committee and the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree are pleased to announce the 2018 Student Grant and Jamboree Scholarship. Student genealogists between the ages of 18 and 23 are eligible to apply for the $500 cash award and full registration scholarship to the 2018 SCGS Jamboree to be held in Burbank, California June 1-2, 2018.

The Student Grant was established in 2010 by family and friends in memory of Suzanne Winsor Freeman, family historian and life-long volunteer, and an enthusiastic annual attendee at the SCGS Jamboree. The 2018 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society will provide conference registration to the SCGS Jamboree in June where the award will be presented. This is a unique opportunity for a young genealogist to attend a premiere regional conference and meet genealogists from throughout the nation.

Past recipients include Mindy Jacox (Kaysville, Utah), Melanie Frick (Renton, Washington), Paul Woodbury (Provo, Utah). Michael Savoca (New York, New York), Elyse Doerflinger (Torrance, California), A.C. Ivory (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Anthony Ray (Palmdale, California).

“The Student Genealogy Grant pays tribute to Suzanne Freeman’s dedication to youth volunteerism and family history by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the SCGS Annual Genealogy Jamboree, Southern California’s premiere regional genealogy conference,” notes Denise Levenick, committee chair and Freeman’s daughter.

“We are especially grateful to Jamboree for providing a three-day conference registration to the grant recipient,” she adds. “SCGS is truly a leader in conference organizations by encouraging youth involvement in genealogy through the student conference scholarship.”

Born in Olathe, Kansas, Suzanne Winsor (Brown) Freeman moved to Orange County, California with her family in the early 1930s where she attended school and lived most of her life. She developed a strong interest in family history sparked by the stories of her mother’s early life in Colorado and Kansas. After retirement Suzanne moved to Green Valley, Arizona where she was active in the local genealogy society. She enjoyed returning to Southern California each year in June to attend the SCGS Jamboree. Suzanne passed away after a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona August 28, 2010.

The $500 cash award pays tribute to these interests by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the Jamboree. In addition, a student scholarship for conference registration to the Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be provided by the Jamboree conference.

Any genealogist who is between the ages of 18 and 23 as of June 1, 2018 and a full-time or part-time student is eligible to apply. The award will be presented at Jamboree 2018; the recipient must be present to receive the award. See the Grant Application for eligibility details.

Funding for the cash award is provided by the family grant program; Jamboree registration is provided by the conference. Individual contributions to the grant program are welcome at the Student Grant Webpage.

Application deadline is April 10, 2018 midnight Pacific Daylight Time.
