A Reconstruction of the Lost 

1890 US Census for 
Southern California & Los Angeles County

In 1890, the state of California was a magnet for immigrants from every corner of the globe. Yet, a significant part of this history went missing.  The 1890 census burned and remnants destroyed; this data is a great loss to genealogists and historians everywhere.

The goal of this project is to help bridge this gap by bringing together, in one searchable database, dozens of different types of sources and thousands of individual records. 


Other information sources will include: 

• Vital records, including births, deaths, and marriages 
• Church records, including baptisms, communicants, marriages, burials, and officials
• Education records, including teacher and pupil inventories
• City directories for Los Angeles and surrounding communities, immigration and naturalization records, and cemetery listings from Los Angeles County 
• Occupation information
• Military rosters, including Civil War veterans and members of the Grand Army of the Republic
• Property and tax records

My name is Megan; most of you know me as SCGS's Jamboree Social Media Coordinator. I am an adoptee born into a theatrical family; both of my parents were prominent figures during the Golden Age of Hollywood. My father is best known for writing eight of the 12 hours of the Mini-Series, "Roots." 

I am a repository for each of my parents' 50 years of work. I felt that my father's contributions to "Roots" would make an excellent addition to Jamboree on its 50th Birthday Bash! 

The book and Mini-Series, "Roots," were timely in 1977, and just as relevant now in 2019, maybe even more so. This piece of work is the heart and soul of genealogy today. Alex Haley ignited the revolution that we are now in. In fact, the first lesson from Alex was before the Mini-Series aired! Do you know what it was? Come to Jamboree to find out! 

The Lee Collection of "Roots" memorabilia to be displayed at Jamboree will include: scripts, rewrites, a signed book, awards, award programs, set photos, set shirts, correspondences between involved parties, the plagiarism lawsuit/settlement papers, and some of the media prior, during, and after the airing of "Roots." 

 A fascinating piece of the exhibit is that "Roots," the book, was published in August of 1976. My father's first draft was dated March of 1976 before the book was published. My father created the Mini-Series from unpublished versions of Alex's book. These unpublished manuscripts held Alex's corrections, comments, and sections that were removed before final publishing.

Workshops

Genealogy is the second most popular hobby in our country. Regardless of our current levels, we all began learning at some point and understand that our learning must continue. In fact, the more we learn, the more we understand what we don't know.  Conferences and conventions have fun one-hour classes that are very informative, but the key to learning is in workshops. They provide a hands-on approach that accelerates learning due to the extended time of a TWO-HOUR session!

SCGS’s 50^th

Jamboree Birthday Bash!

 Long before you arrive at our Jamboree’s 50^th Birthday Bash, the Jamboree committee has been busy making every experience extra special for you. Food is an essential part of a good experience. How often have you signed up for a big banquet dinner, only to think the food is going to be unpredictable, but the speaker will be worth it?

We at Jamboree think your dining experience should be as enjoyable as the speakers chosen for you to listen to while dining. We planned to make your meal experience unique by creating and tasting every item with the chef at the Marriott until the combinations were just right.

It was a fun day. We arrived with an appetite and remembered to not overindulge on any one item because many were tasted. We wanted our pallets as sharp on the first plate as the last. We taste tested using two beef, two chicken, and two vegetarian aficionados, a diverse crew.  Remember what you see in these photos may not be in our final selections! We usually pick one of two in each category presented.

Chef Chris, formerly from the Santa Barbara Four Seasons Hotel, and his gracious staff at the Burbank Marriott presented the choices two at a time. The vegetarian’s tasted everything, except the meat. We tasted until we were content, rearranging starches and vegetables with different meats; nothing was to be overcooked or al dente! We wanted flavors, 

fresh ingredients, and a flare of fabulous in our food!

When the tasting was completed, the menu was finalized for you with the combinations of foods we felt you would enjoy the most!  Next, we assigned each meal to all six banquets. We will have three breakfast and three dinner speakers; you can already go to the Breakfast and Banquet section on the Jamboree website and view our delectable combinations.  One of these incredible desserts made it in to a dinner banquet menu; can you figure out which one?
