Utah Genealogist Receives Youth Award

The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Genealogy Grant Committee is pleased to announce that Mindy Jacox, a young genealogist from Kaysville, Utah is the 2017 recipient of the Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Grant and Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree Scholarship.

Mindy will be introduced and presented with the award at the Saturday evening conference banquet. She receives $500 from the Freeman Memorial Grant program and 3-day registration to the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree in Burbank, California from SCGS. This is the seventh year that the Freeman Student Genealogy Grant Program and SCGS have partnered to offer a student genealogy award.

“We are delighted to recognize young genealogists with the grant program and encourage their future in family history,” noted Denise Levenick, Grant Chair. “The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Genealogy Grant is presented in recognition of a young genealogist who is outstanding not only in her own genealogical endeavors, but also as a teacher and trainer for family historians at every skill level.

Mindy Jacox is a recent graduate of the Family History program at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah with an emphasis in Germanic research and computer science. She is currently employed as a Data Analyst at FamilySearch in Salt Lake City and is Co-Director for the BYU myFamilyHistory Youth Camp.

“I love that my job combines family history research with advancing technology,” Mindy says.  “It's amazing to see how technology is accelerating family history research and I enjoy supporting these automated systems with training data.”

Mindy’s job with the myFamilyHistory Youth Camp gives her the opportunity to share her knowledge with a new generation of family historians. “There is nothing better than watching the excitement as they discover that family history research is fun and exciting!” she adds.

Mindy plans to use the $500 cash grant funds toward learning more about DNA research, attending the Jamboree DNA Day and purchasing DNA kits to put her knowledge to use.

Suzanne Freeman was a life-long volunteer who worked with many youth organizations in the capacity of leader, organizer, and administrator. She also developed a strong interest in family history and was delighted by the growing number of young genealogists. She enjoyed attending the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree and at the time of her death in Tucson, Arizona August 28, 2010, was still searching for elusive Winsor cousins.

“The Student Genealogy Grant pays tribute to Suzanne Freeman’s dedication to youth volunteerism and family history by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the SCGS Annual Genealogy Jamboree, Southern California’s premiere regional genealogy conference,” notes Denise Levenick, committee chair, and Freeman’s daughter.

“We are especially grateful to Jamboree for providing a three-day conference registration to the grant recipient,” she adds. “SCGS is truly a leader in conference organizations by encouraging youth involvement in genealogy through the student conference scholarship.”

The $500 cash award pays tribute to these interests by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the Jamboree. In addition, a student scholarship for conference registration to the Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be provided by the Jamboree conference.

Any genealogist who is between the ages of 18 and 23 as of June 9, 2017 and a full-time or part-time is eligible to apply. The award will be presented at Jamboree 2017; the recipient must be present to receive the award. See the Grant Application for eligibility details.

The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Grant Committee and the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree are pleased to announce the 2017 Student Grant and Jamboree Scholarship. Student genealogists between the ages of 18 and 23 are eligible to apply for the $500 cash award and full registration scholarship to the 2017 SCGS Jamboree to be held in Burbank, California June 9-11, 2017.

The Student Grant was established in 2010 by family and friends in memory of Suzanne Winsor Freeman, family historian and life-long volunteer, and an enthusiastic annual attendee at the SCGS Jamboree. The 2017 Southern California Genealogy Jamboree sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society will provide three-day conference registration to the SCGS Jamboree in June where the award will be presented. This is a unique opportunity for a young genealogist to attend a premiere regional conference and meet genealogists from throughout the nation.

Born in Olathe, Kansas, Suzanne Winsor (Brown) Freeman moved to Orange County, California with her family in the early 1930s where she attended school and lived most of her life. She developed a strong interest in family history sparked by the stories of her mother’s early life in Colorado and Kansas. After retirement Suzanne moved to Green Valley, Arizona where she was active in the local genealogy society. She enjoyed returning to Southern California each year in June to attend the SCGS Jamboree. Suzanne passed away after a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona August 28, 2010.

The $500 cash award pays tribute to these interests by awarding the annual cash grant to a young genealogist attending the Jamboree. In addition, a student scholarship for conference registration to the Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be provided by the Jamboree conference.

Jamboree 2016: Southern California Genealogist Receives Youth Award

Melanie Frick, MLIS, is the 2016 recipient of the Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Genealogy Grant and Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree Scholarship.  Melanie was introduced at the SCGS Scholarship Breakfast Sunday, June 5th 2016, sponsored by Legacy Tree Genealogists, Professional Genealogists and Research Services, and presented with the $500 cash award and recognition certificate. The grant program was founded in 2011 by family and friends to honor the volunteerism and family history interests of the late Suzanne Winsor Freeman.

Melanie Frick, an Iowa native with deep Midwestern roots, is a 20-something young genealogist who has already spent over fifteen years researching her family history. At the age of twelve, Melanie inherited an early 20^th century diary written by her great-great-aunt, a South Dakota prairie schoolteacher. She was fascinated by the stories of “barn dances, schoolhouse shenanigans, family gatherings, and the spread of Influenza in her rural community.” Melanie continues to unravel the stories of her ancestors in her popular blog, Homestead Genealogy  (https://homesteadgenealogy.com).

Melanie pursued her interest in history and research by earning a Bachelor of Arts in History from Iowa State University, and a Master of Science in Library and Information Science with a Certificate in Special Collections from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Currently Melanie serves on the board and is content coordinator of the NextGen Genealogy Network, an organization dedicated to connecting ad empowering young genealogists around the world. She also editor of the APG eNews and volunteers as proofreader of the NGS Magazine.

“We are delighted to recognize young genealogists with the grant program and encourage their future in family history,” noted Denise Levenick, Grant Chair. “This year, in the absence of qualified applicants for the student award, the Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Genealogy Grant is presented in recognition of a young genealogist who is outstanding not only in her own genealogical endeavors, but also as an advocate for other young genealogists.”

This is the sixth year that the Freeman Student Genealogy Grant Program and SCGS have partnered to offer a student genealogy award. The Scholarship Breakfast featured speaker was Paul Woodbury, 2014 recipient of the Genealogy Grant who is now Outreach Manager for Legacy Tree Genealogists.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Sheila Benedict

Sheila is currently the part-time archivist at Old Mission Santa Inés and is self-employed as a forensic and family genealogist. Sheila was awarded the Pearl Chase Historic Preservation and Conservation Award from the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.  Sheila wrote the California booklet for the National Genealogical Society's "Research in the States" series.  A recent forensic genealogy article was published in the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy Newsletter.

She is a graduate, CSUSB, with a BA in Political Science with post courses in history, social sciences, and paralegal studies. Genealogical courses completed include the Forensic Genealogy Institute, Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research, National Institute of Genealogical Research, National Genealogical Society, and a workshop on Mastering Genealogical Proof.

The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Memorial Student Genealogy Grant Committee is pleased to announce that Paul Woodbury, a Brigham Young University senior from Provo, Utah will receive $500 from the Freeman Memorial Grant program and 3-day registration to the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree in Burbank, California from SCGS.

Paul Woodbury will attend the SCGS Jamboree June 6-8, 2014 and use the grant funds toward genealogy research and education. This is the fourth year that the Freeman Student Genealogy Grant Program and SCGS have partnered to offer a student genealogy award.

“We are delighted to recognize young genealogists with the grant program and encourage their future in family history,” notes Denise Levenick, Grant Chair. “It is exciting to see “The Next Generation of Genealogists” is already here!”

“We are so pleased to be able to partner with the Freeman Student Genealogy Grant Program to support this outstanding future genealogist,” said Paula Hinkel, Jamboree co-chair and SCGS vice president. “Paul will be recognized at the Jamboree Scholarship Breakfast on Sunday, June 8.” Tickets to the Scholarship Breakfast are still available here.

Paul is an active member of the Utah Genealogical Society, the International Society of Genetic Genealogy, and the NextGen Genealogy Network. He works and teaches classes at the BYU Center for Family History and Genealogy and is especially interested in the role of genetic genealogy to locate obscure ancestors and solve identity challenges of adoptees and abandoned children.

About the Grant Program: The Suzanne Winsor Freeman Student Genealogy Grant Program was established in 2011 to help young family historians pursue their genealogy research and educational goals. In recognition of Suzanne Freeman’s enthusiasm for the nationally recognized Jamboree, the award is directed toward a student attending the SCGS Jamboree.
