The laws our ancestors lived by tell the story of those earlier times in ways no other record type can, and California's early laws tell of setting up archives, paying the bills, and carving out a new life in the new state. This lecture looks at finding and using California’s rich and deep legal resources from colonial times into statehood.

The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who writes and lectures on topics ranging from using court records in family history to understanding DNA testing. On the faculty of numerous genealogy institutes, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, from which she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer. She holds a BFA in Fiber Arts and Textiles and a Certificate of Genealogy and Family History, both from the University of Washington. She retired from the corporate world after a 35-year career in textile technology, team leadership, and project management for global companies. Lori Lee has been researching family histories for over 20 years. Member of APG, Seattle Gen Society, and WA State Gen Society’s Speaker List.

Linda Serna 

Linda has been involved in researching and writing family stories for over 35 years. In addition, she was privileged to work as a genealogist for the first season of the PBS Genealogy Roadshow program. She is past Treasurer for SCCAPG, and a member of GSG, PGS-CA, NMGS, GSHA-CA and past VP of Programs for OCCGS. Her loves include history, writing, and traveling. She especially likes seeing how individual family stories fit in and make up the fabric of history.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Judy G. Russell, JD, CG, CGL

The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree. She writes, teaches and lectures on a wide variety of genealogical topics, ranging from using court records in family history to understanding DNA testing. A Colorado native with deep roots in the American south on her mother's side and entirely in Germany on her father's side, she is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society and numerous state and regional genealogical societies. She has written for the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and the National Genealogical Society Magazine, among other publications.

On the faculty of the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research in Alabama, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy, the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh and Boston University's Center for Professional Education, she is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, from which she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist℠ and Certified Genealogical Lecturer℠.  Her blog, chosen as one of the American Bar Association's top 100 in 2013 and 2014, appears at the Legal Genealogist website (http://www.legalgenealogist.com).
