[CA--SCGS] The SCGS Library Will Remain Closed Through the End of June 2020

Due to the continuing concerns over Covid-19 and our efforts to prevent and slow the spread of the virus by maintaining social distancing, the SCGS library will be remain closed to patrons through the end of June 2020 and into the first part of July 2020.

We do have an excellent research team available to assist you with your research. Go to our SCGS website to order services, at SCGS Research Team Assistance

We at SCGS are following the guidelines as mandated by the County of Los Angeles. Currently, the county is aiming at a reopen date of July 4, 2020.  We at SCGS are hopeful that the SCGS library will reopen on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. However, that decision will be based on data and science models as offered by the county.

We will keep you updated when additional information is available.

We will continue to work with all of our SCGS Interest Groups (Ethnic, Computer Software, Writer's Group, and DNA) to organize online meetings for the month of June and beyond (as needed). We will post those updates once each group has finalized their plans.

Please note that our Jamboree Webinar Extension Series will go on as planned. We look forward to 'seeing' you online!

Our Jamboree committee continues to discuss our plans for the 2021 Jamboree conference.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The Future of the Southern California Jamboree

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree has never shied away from change.
Jamboree started 50 years ago as a one-day single room exhibitor show. Today, the Jamboree brand has evolved to offer:
  • Three conferences over four days – Genetic Genealogy, Genealogy Jamboree and JamboFree – with over 120 classes, nationally and internationally known speakers, and major exhibitors.
  • Twenty-two annual webinars free at broadcast, and available on-demand for SCGS members.
  • A website, online services, digital communications and marketing to a worldwide network of genealogical and historical societies.

Jamboree loves to innovate.
Jamboree was the first genealogy conference to offer a whole day dedicated to genetic genealogy and the first to offer a mobile app. It is still the only single Society-sponsored genealogy conference to be all-volunteer created and run.

It’s time to leap forward.
Genealogists are constantly evolving with technology. Today many enjoy educational opportunities through online webinars and virtual conferences. As a result, traditional in-person conferences, like Jamboree, are impacted as they compete for resources, speakers and genealogy dollars. The time has come for SCGS and Jamboree to take a leap forward and reinvent. The new Jamboree is under construction and plans to return in June 2021.

What you can do?
Add your voice. Tell SCGS what you want in a conference. Take the survey coming out later this summer and make your mark on creating the next Jamboree.

Join us in 2021.
What can you expect? An outstanding educational conference in the form you want and at a reasonable price. SCGS has always structured Jamboree to be what members, attendees and volunteers want. As always, we promise to create a fun and friendly learning environment for serious genealogists.

Thank you for 50 years of support for Genealogy Jamboree, and for your continued support as we leap forward to the future of Jamboree in 2021.

The Searcher: Changes in the Delivery of the Searcher

The Searcher
Changes in the Delivery of the Searcher

Membership Renewal starting 2019 with Extra Charge for Printed and Mailed Searcher

As printing and postage costs have risen, many genealogical societies no longer print their magazines.  While a number of our members have switched to a digital, rather than a printed The Searcher, most members are still receiving a printed issue.

As of January 2019, when a member renews their membership, their dues will remain at the same level as in 2018, but there will be a $10 surcharge per year for the printed and mailed The Searcher.

All members will still be able to access The Searcher by logging into their account and clicking on the button Members-Only Resources.

Speaker Changes at Jamboree and Genetic Genealogy 2017 Conferences

Due to the unexpected illness of a family member, Emily D. Aulicino, MA, will be unable to attend the Genetic Genealogy and Jamboree 2017 conferences. Our thoughts are with Ms. Aulicino and her family at this time.

In her place, the following changes have been made:

Genetic Genealogy Conference - Thursday, June 8:
TH010 and TH018 will now be presented by Cheri Mello.

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
TH010 How to Convince Relatives and Strangers to DNA Test and Why
** This session will no longer be live streamed. Stay tuned for a separate announcement regarding the DNA Live Streamed Sessions.

2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Cheri Mello began dabbling in genealogy as a 5th grader with the U.S. History assignment. She began her active adult research 25 years ago, after the death of her remaining grandparents. Her expertise ranges from various areas of America to Portugal, as well as DNA, genealogy software and more!

Jamboree 2017 - Friday, June 9:
Workshop FR-A will now be presented by Angie Bush, MS.

8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
*Workshops are separate from Jamboree and required separate registration fees. Registration is now closed.

Angie Bush, MS, is the Region 1 Director for the National Genealogical Society and the chair of the Genetic Genealogy Committee. Her day job is as Genetic Genealogist Researcher with Ancestry ProGenealogists in Salt Lake City. Although she spends a lot of time working on recent unknown parentage cases (adoptions, unknown fathers), her favorite type of research involves solving decades-old “brick-walls” using a combination of traditional records and genetic evidence. Angie is a Utah native and lives with her husband and two descendants in Sandy, Utah.
