Genograms for Family Medical History and Cluster Research
Learn what genograms are and how to adapt them to your research. By providing a different view of relationships, genograms can make patterns and gaps more easily recognizable. How is a genogram different from existing pedigree or descendant charts? For one, ancestors, descendants and collateral lines can be represented on a single chart. This more expansive view of the extended family is more complete and may better represent adoptions, naming patterns or blended families. In addition, through the use of simple symbols, a genogram can display gender, living status or multiple births easily. With its origination in social services and therapy, genograms do not have to represent only biological relationships. Neighbors, partners (business and otherwise), locations or even pets can be included. Anything that forms a nexus of a relationship which makes genograms valuable tools in cluster research as well.
