Jamboree Cousin Connections: Check Those Name Badges!

Picture this:

You're at the Genetic Genealogy Conference in Burbank, California. It's a hot, sunny June Thursday, and you're grateful to be indoors where the air is cool and the atmosphere is charged with excitement.

You're in a room full of strangers. No, not really strangers... this is your tribe, the people who share your passion for genealogy and family history.

You smile, say hello, and make small talk with those around you.

But do you look at the name tags?  Do you actually take the time to read that person's name and what is printed on their badge?

You should.

You just never know.... you may be talking to a cousin you never even knew you had!

Cousin Connections.

They happen year after year at Jamboree and at the Genetic Genealogy Conference.

Here's a Cousin Connection from 2015:

At Thursday's (fabulous!!!!) DNA day, I saw a woman with the same middle
name as me.

Sure enough--we are both ORDWAY's !! Both descend from a "famous" witch in
the family & now connect on Facebook and she has me in an Ordway group on
Facebook.

Haven't had time to do any more work on our shared lines yet, but we did
invite to Ancestry trees and will be in touch, I am sure.

Cool, huh?

Christine ORDWAY Klukkert

Jane ORDWAY Carmen

We can't wait to hear about the Cousin Connections at Jamboree 2016!

Cousin Connection at Jamboree - A Speaker Connection

We've seen serendipity at work at Jamboree many times. Countless stories of cousin connections have been shared with the Jamboree teams over the past years.

Here's a great connection that was shared at Jamboree 2015, and continues to evolve.

From Deborah (Rupp) Volper, SCGS Member, and Jamboree Volunteer:

This story is about my Cousin Connection to David R. Dowell. I got to meet David for the first time on DNA Day at Jamboree 2015.  It was a wonderful experience to meet and get to know each other there. My mother was Ruby (Dowell) Rupp. In my Dowell lineage, there is a brick wall with my fourth great grandfather Martin Dowell, born about 1803, who married Mary Hall in 1830 in Montgomery County, Ohio.

My third cousin Pamela and I have been searching for answers concerning this brick wall. We had both taken autosomal DNA tests but found no Dowell surname matches. My mother's brother and her two sisters also agreed to take the autosomal test. Again, no Dowell surname matches.

Next, my uncle and Pamela's father (Dowell 2nd cousins) agreed to take the yDNA test at Family Tree DNA. The tests were ordered and we joined the Dowell DNA Surname Project administered by David Dowell.

Lo and behold, my uncle's 67-marker test and Pamela's father's 37-marker test match David exactly. So, we now know that our Dowell family line extends to the Maryland Dowell family of Philip Dowell (b: about 1673 in Maryland).

We still have to find the parents and possible siblings of our Martin to be able to connect him to his line. The results of our testing have given us hope that we will be able to find the missing links.

David and I also found a connection through our respective Richardson family lines. David is an 8th cousin twice removed to Pamela and me in this line. He is expecting our Dowell family connection to be closer.

2016 update from David Dowell:  Just this week Deborah got back from the FTDNA lab a more extensive test report on her uncle’s yDNA. He is an exact 111 marker match for me AND for the hypothesized 111 markers of my 6th great-grandfather who died in 1733. So far Deborah’s uncle is the only cousin who has been an exact match for me and for our North American founder.

It just goes to show that at Jamboree, you really can make connections and important discoveries that can help solve family mysteries and break down those pesky brick walls!

We look forward to hearing about all kinds of cousin connections at Jamboree 2016!

See you there!

Thank you to Deborah Volper and David Dowell for sharing their connection with Jamboree.

Cousin Connections at Genealogy Jamboree

You might be wondering "What are the odds of finding a cousin in the crowd at a genealogy conference?"

The answer - pretty darn good!

Over the years, Jamboree has been witness to many serendipitous connections.

You just never know...the person sitting next to you or smiling at you as you are walking down the hall just might be relative.

It just proves that at Jamboree, you are among family.
So take the opportunity to say hello. Introduce yourself.
Look at name badges.
There might be a surname or two you recognize from your family tree!

At Jamboree 2015 SCGS Volunteers Janice Noyes Atha and Lynne Parmenter discovered they shared common roots in a Puritan village in Massachusetts.

As Lynne stated, "we may be cousins 12 generations and many "removed" apart, but we found each other! No matter how far apart, it's always thrilling to make that connection, share research and ultimately attach new cousins to your family tree."

Cousin Connections.

They happen year after year at Jamboree.

We can't wait to hear about the cousin connections that will be made this year!

Registration Update: "Family History and DNA" Conference - Burbank June 6, 2013

This is a quick note to let everyone know that interest is very strong for "Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013," and we are already 25 percent sold out. This is well ahead of the registration response that we typically see for Jamboree. If you plan to attend, in the words of my Iowa grandmother, "Don't let the grass grow under your feet." We will very likely sell out.

This is truly becoming an international event, with attendees from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and points beyond, as well as locations around the US. We are excited to see that family historians everywhere are embracing the concept of an independent day-long conference about genetic genealogy.

As a reminder, the "Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013" conference will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Hotel, 2500 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank, California. The event is co-sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG).

Featured speakers include Dr. Spencer Wells, Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic, and lunch speaker Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.  Please note that lunch requires an additional payment. To clarify, lunch is for registered attendees only. Registrants may invite a guest (e.g. spouse), as long as space is available.  I wish we could accommodate everyone at this fabulous luncheon; however, we haven't yet found a way to stretch the walls of the Convention Center.

Plan to stay for Jamboree, which starts on Friday, June 7. Friday morning's sessions are JamboFREE, and Friday afternoon features a DNA panel as well as an African American DNA session. Of course, we encourage you to stay for the entire weekend.

The Early-bird Conference Registration costs (before 30 April 2013) are listed below. Registration costs increase by $25 between 1 May and 24 May. Walk-in registration, if space is available, is $225 for everyone.
  • SCGS Members - $175 on or before 30 April 2013
  • SCGS Non-Members - $195 on or before 30 April 2013

28 February 2013

Spencer Wells, PhD and Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., PhD to Speak at Conference in Burbank, CA

It’s rare that a new type of event is introduced to the genealogical community. The Southern California Genealogical Society and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy are proud to announce such an event.

Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” is a one-day conference designed to fully explore the application of genetic genealogy in researching family history. It will be held Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport, Burbank, California. Registrations are open now and an early-bird registration discount is in place through April 30.

“We are so excited that this new conference will break new ground in genetic genealogy gatherings,” said SCGS president Alice Fairhurst, who helped to found the society’s DNA interest group and has been actively applying DNA in her own genealogy research. “Family History and DNA” differs from other DNA events in several ways.

First, speakers are among the most highly respected and knowledgeable professionals in the DNA and genetic genealogy universe.

The opening session will be conducted by Spencer Wells, PhD, an Explorer-in-Residence with the National Geographic Society. He leads The Genographic Project, which is collecting and analyzing hundreds of thousands of DNA samples from people around the world. Dr. Wells’ presentation is “The Genographic Project and the Rise of Citizen Science.”

Genetics has revolutionized our understanding of human history. Advances in genetic technology have allowed ever deeper insights into the human story. Now whole-genome sequences and large-scale arrays of genetic markers are providing a richer view of our shared past, revealing details that remained hidden using other genetic tools. Since 2005, the Genographic Project has used the latest genetic technology to expand our knowledge of the human story, and its pioneering use of DNA testing to engage and involve the public in the research effort has helped to create a new breed of "citizen scientist." Geno 2.0 expands the scope for citizen science, harnessing the power of the crowd to discover new details of human population history.

The luncheon speaker will be Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., PhD, director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Dr. Gates is an American literary critic, educator, scholar, writer and film maker. His programs for PBS, including Finding Your Roots, African American Lives, Faces of America and Oprah’s Roots, explored family histories of a number of individuals through the use of DNA. (Please note that the luncheon requires an additional fee of $20 for paid registrants of the Thursday DNA conference, and $60 for spouses or guests of those registrants.)

Other speakers include Judy G. Russell, JD, CG; Richard Hill; Emily D. Aulicino; Katherine Hope Borges; CeCe Moore; Tim Janzen, MD; Blaine Bettinger, JD; and Debbie Parker Wayne, CG. We are grateful for the enthusiastic support show by all our speakers, especially Dr. Well and Dr. Gates, through their participation in this conference.

Second, “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” is produced by independent groups, not for-profit DNA organizations. The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) and the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) have joined forces to offer this inaugural DNA event. While it is independent of financial support by any of the commercial DNA companies, the event will provide equal access to Family Tree DNA, 23andMe, and AncestryDNA.

CeCe Moore, speaker, conference co-chair and Southern California Regional Coordinator for ISOGG explained, “I've dreamed of a genetic genealogy conference sponsored by ISOGG for a long time, and I am thrilled to be working in cooperation with SCGS on this inaugural event. Holding the conference in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree helps us reach many family historians who would otherwise not be able to attend.”

Finally, the event’s three session tracks are organized by the level of experience using genetic genealogy, and not based on the attendee’s knowledge of family history. Sessions include beginner basics, use of DNA in finding adoptee families, famous DNA, autosomal DNA, mitochondrial DNA, analyzing results and other topics. The final hour of the day will be a resource hour, with small-group discussions and supplier assistance.

"Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013" Conference Announced

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 4, 2013

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) and the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) announce an innovative, important one-day DNA conference, “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013,” to be held June 6, 2013, in conjunction with the Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.

The featured speaker is Dr. Spencer Wells of the National Geographic Genographic Project, who will review the Genographic Project. Other speakers presenting state-of-the-art uses of DNA in the search for ancestors include The Genetic Genealogist Blaine Bettinger, JD; Tim Janzen, MD; The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell, JD, CG; Your Genetic Genealogist CeCe Moore; DNA Testing Adviser Richard Hill, MBA; and Katherine Hope Borges, the director of ISOGG. Additional speakers will be announced soon. Also participating in the day-long seminar will be representatives from the major commercial DNA organizations – FamilyTreeDNA, 23andMe, and AncestryDNA. Separate tracks will be targeted for beginners and advanced genetic genealogists.

One-on-one consultations will be available during the final hour of the day. Help is available to interpret results and to use the various testing organization websites and resources. This personal assistance will help even the most inexperienced family historians apply genetic genealogy as another tool in their research toolbox.

What makes this event so special? “This is the very first genetic genealogy conference that is independently produced by societies such as ISOGG and SCGS,” explained CeCe Moore, the conference co-chair. “I have dreamed of an ISOGG-sponsored genetic genealogy conference for a long time, and I am thrilled to be working in cooperation with the SCGS Jamboree on this inaugural event. Holding the conference in conjunction with the Genealogy Jamboree helps us reach many family historians who would otherwise not be able to attend.”

“We are so excited about breaking new ground in genetic genealogy gatherings,” said SCGS president Alice Fairhurst, who also leads the society’s DNA interest group and has been actively applying DNA in her own genealogy research. “As more family historians have DNA tests, genetic genealogy is becoming more valuable in the search for ancestors and living relatives.”

Online registration for “Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2013” opens on Friday, January 4, 2013.  The conference will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA. Early-bird discounted registration is $175 for SCGS members and $195 for nonmembers. Prices increases after 30 April 2013.

The Southern California Genealogy Jamboree will be held at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank on June 7-8, 2013. It is produced by the Southern California Genealogical Society, 417 Irving Drive, Burbank, CA 91504, phone 818-843-7247.
