As a genealogist, Barb Groth knows what goes into the sometimes laborious task of searching through records, visits to courthouses and other repositories, as well as deciphering what has been uncovered on microfiche. She is a family historian and a digital scrapbooker. Originally from Milwaukee, WI, she now resides in Pinedale, WY.

Barb is retired, but busier than ever before, preserving family history artistically through the use of digital genealogy scrapbooks, as an author of an e-book and, of course, continually working on her own genealogy research.

Tim has a strong interest in many areas of genetic genealogy, particularly in regards to phasing and autosomal DNA analysis.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Hal Bookbinder

Hal Bookbinder is currently focused on Jewish history, finding missing relatives, European border changes, immigration, citizenship and safe computing. He has authored articles and spoken at numerous conferences and society meetings, both in person and through live webinars from his office at UCLA.

He is a former president of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) and currently serves on the JewishGen Board of Governors. He was lead co-Chair for the IAJGS Lifetime Achievement Award. He has identified over 4.000 relatives in 26 states and 8 countries. He traces his and his wife's roots to modern Ukraine and adjacent areas of Moldova, Poland, Belarus and Russia. He is an information technology director for UCLA Health, teaches for the University of Phoenix and directs a job skills program for individuals in recovery at the LA Midnight Mission.

As Russia expanded, it absorbed more and more Jews. This talk examines Russia's efforts to limit the Jews and the border changes which resulted in towns shifting form one country to another.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Sheila Benedict

Sheila is currently the part-time archivist at Old Mission Santa Inés and is self-employed as a forensic and family genealogist. Sheila was awarded the Pearl Chase Historic Preservation and Conservation Award from the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.  Sheila wrote the California booklet for the National Genealogical Society's "Research in the States" series.  A recent forensic genealogy article was published in the Council for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy Newsletter.

She is a graduate, CSUSB, with a BA in Political Science with post courses in history, social sciences, and paralegal studies. Genealogical courses completed include the Forensic Genealogy Institute, Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research, National Institute of Genealogical Research, National Genealogical Society, and a workshop on Mastering Genealogical Proof.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Headliner: Dr. Michael D. Lacopo

Dr. Michael Lacopo was born and raised in Northern Indiana surrounded by extended family always willing to tell tall tales. Intrigued by these, he took to genealogical research in 1980 to substantiate these family stories. Combing libraries, archives, cemeteries, and courthouses as a teenager, Michael gained the skills needed to become a keen researcher. His first major research challenge undertaken in 1982 was to locate the birthparents of his mother, who was adopted as an infant. You can read about this adventure at his blog Roots4U.blogspot.com with some engaging story-telling, plot twists and new findings!

Michael completed his doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1991. As befitting a doctor, he treats his genealogical research as he would medicine - carefully, methodically and completely. In 2013 Michael retired from his medical career to pursue genealogical research full-time as a profession. He has contributed to numerous periodicals and has helped numerous people in their quests to locate their relatives - living and dead. His national lecturing began in 2004, and has continued with several local, state, national, and international conference speaking engagements to this present day. He believes that as genealogists we should tell the tales of our ancestors and is a vocal proponent for learning the social history that interweaves our ancestors into the fabric of the past.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Headliners: Chris Schauble

Chris Schauble is the co-anchor of Los Angeles' KTLA 5 Morning News from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays.

Since moving to Los Angeles in 2001, Chris has earned multiple awards, including two Emmy awards and five Golden Mike Awards.  In 2007, he was also named to the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's "40 Under 40" list (he laughingly admits he no longer qualifies).

Chris is passionate about his work, family, and fitness.  He is a marathoner and triathlete, having completed in three Ironman competitions, including Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Prior to his Los Angeles work, Chris spent time at KCNC-TV in Denver where he covered a number of national stories.  His coverage of the Columbine High School shootings helped the station earn a regional Emmy for spot news.  In 2000, Chris was named "Television Journalist of the Year" by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists, and in 2001 he was honored as one of Denver's top 10 history-makers by Urban Spectrum Magazine.

Schauble holds a Bachelor or Arts in broadcast journalism from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.  He was honored by Fort Lewis College with the 2002 "Distinguished Alumni Award."  In addition to his work as a journalist, Chris has been an instructor for speech communications and media research analysis at Miles College in Birmingham, Ala., and was a guest Instructor at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

As an adoptee himself, Chris has dedicated much of his free time to helping needy children.  He has been recognized by the city of Los Angeles and the state of California multiple times for his ongoing community service.  Chris, his wife and their two sets of twin girls live in the Los Angeles area.

As we've mentioned before, Jamboree doesn't designate official bloggers like some other genealogy conferences.  To us, every attendee, every blogger, every social media user, every exhibitor, speaker or sponsor is equally important.  Instead, we use the term "honorary blogger" for all of our friends.

Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Headliners: Thomas W. Jones, Ph.D., CG, CGL, FASG, FUGA, FNGS

Dr. Thomas W. Jones is an award-winning genealogical author, editor, educator, and researcher who is board certified.  He focuses on genealogical methods and solutions to challenging research problems.  Although he has solved genealogical problems in most American states and five European countries, he specializes in Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Northern Ireland, and Virginia.  He teaches in Boston University's Genealogical Research Certificate Program and coordinates courses at GRIP, IGHR, and SLIG institutes.

Since 1997 Tom has been a regular speaker at FGS, NGS, and regional, state, local, and international genealogical society conferences and workshops.  Since 2002 he has co-edited the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, and he is the author of the textbook/workbook Mastering Genealogical Proof.

Jay Fonkert is a director of APG, a trustee of the BCG Education Fund, and a past president of the Minnesota Genealogical Society. He has published more than 30 research and teaching articles in Minnesota Genealogist, The Septs, Family Chronicle, NGS Magazine and the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, and has spoken at society meetings and major conferences in eight states and provinces.
