Jamboree 2015 - Meet the Speaker: Michael Nolden Henderson, LCDR, USN Ret.

Michael Nolden Henderson, Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy retired, is a genealogist and family history researcher who began his journey almost 30 years ago. Henderson is the author of Got Proof! My Genealogical Journey Through the Use of Documentation, his memoir detailing his discovery of an enslaved ancestor who gained her freedom in 1779. In 2014, he was awarded the 50th Georgia Author of the Year Award in the memoir category from the Georgia Writers Association.

Henderson is the first and only African American member of the Georgia Society, Sons of the American Revolution. He is a member of other lineage societies, including the General Society of the War of 1812, and Order of the Founders of North America, 1492-1692. He is also a member of numerous genealogical and historical organizations. His genealogy research has been exhibited at the National Archives and Records Administration in Atlanta, GA and at the Louisville, KY International Airport.

He is a lecturer who speaks frequently to groups nationwide. In 2014, he was awarded the Award of Merit from the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), and he is the recipient of the 2013 James Dent Walker Award for Excellence in African American Genealogical Research. In 2010, Henderson was featured in a segment of the PBS program History Detectives. He is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and a graduate of Xavier University.  Michael currently lives near Atlanta, GA.
